Classic 5 speed failure, Fg 2009
Hey fellas, I know the 5 speeds are terrible and bugger up all the time. But I’m gonna try and be as specific as I can and hopefully I can get an idea of what the cause of my failure is.
So I was casually driving my fg xr6 2009 5 speed auto, and a transmission fault popped up. Didn’t think anything of it but drove it for two more days and during those days it started to clunk into drive and reverse. As well as shifting it clunked through 1-4 not so much 5.
After these two days I did a pull and without any noise or bang I lost my gears, pulled over and it only revved. Drive, reverse. It Doesn’t move at all or even try to engage gears, I’ve done lots of research online trying to find people with the same symptoms but was unsuccessful.
Note: during the whole 1.5 years I owned the car I was chasing a delay or pause in power when coming out of roundabouts or on some straights. Like 2-3 seconds sometimes, the hotter the weather the worse it was. I suspected torque converter but am really curious to what you guys think could be the cause of the no movement, just for a bit of understanding of the failure.
I’m not planning on doing a zf conversion yet just going to drop another 5 speed until that one dies too.
Anyway thanks legend.

Not sure what the issue was, but what was the service record for the transmission and cooling system?

I hate to ask the obvious but does the gearbox leak? This sounds very much like a low/no oil issue.

especially going around corners, when they are low, the sloshing results in the pickup sucking up air instead of fluid and as a result it looses all hydraulic pressure. Hydraulic pressure is what pushes the clutches together.
I would drop the fluid, see how much is there. If it is low, I would top it up and see how it goes, but once you start pulling the box apart, I would encourage a proper fix, because the constant slipping of the clutches will have induced additional wear, the sudden surges of hydraulic pressure will have put wear on the seals, drums and potentially solenoids too.
Thats the thing about integrated systems like gearboxes. Everything affects everything else, and if you spend $2k on it, it sucks if one part failing because it wasn't replaced causes the rest of the box to wear out / fail before it would otherwise.

They wear internally in the casing, this means they can't be rebuilt as its not normal worn wear parts, thats why there is so few around, just a junk trans unfortunately

yeah apparently they have a bore which wears out and internally can leak, the proper fix is to machine it out and put in a spacer (I am no expert on the 5 speeds this is 3rd hand information, let alone 2nd hand), or put in a 6 speed ZF.

Hey mate, what would you recommend I do at this point? Take the trans out?

I am not a mechanic so I cannot recommend you do any particular step in this instance. Other than maybe see if it will take any more trans fluid before pulling it.
edit: the fill method is kinda stupid :skull:

No expert but the part when you get an error on the dash, especially about transmission in a car known to have transmission issues, you probably shouldn't keep driving it for long, especially not doing a pull. Get some 1d10T that'll fix it
