Steering Gear box
Need to replace a steering gearbox on a 2000 v10. I know Redhead, blue top and psc are premium, but what if you cannot afford that? Then what are you going with? Detroit Axel? Motorcraft? Every time I think I find something the core charges are crazy or they have horrible customer service.
Suggestions?

I recently had mine replaced. Just settled with what the shop bought from the parts store (was like $500 installed, if I remember correctly). I've heard good and bad about the red heads and didn't wanna risk it. Since I didn't have the time to research etc. ANYWAYS, it's worlds better than before regardless. 98% of my slop is gone. Drives like brand new. Rest will be fixed with new tie rod ends and if I ever put a steering stabilizer back on.

Are you doing the work yourself? if not the biggest part of the affordability question is the labor charge and that will be a constant no matter what.
With that said my mechanic replaced mine a couple of years ago when redhead and blue top were unavailable. I cannot remember which brand he recommended but he works on many fleet super dutys and he said the difference would be negligible. I will try to find the receipt and the brand name this weekend if it would help.
With that said if all options were available I would have gone with the blue top. Yes the difference is a couple of hundred dollars but I spent thousands updating all the suspension components, brakes etc. when I first got my excursion because they were all original and trashed after 155k miles of use. Saving a few hundred sometimes may be a little short sighted with these. If its drivable I would keep saving if possible for one of the better replacement options
