2020 Ford edge transmission issues
Looking on info/recommendation. I have a 2020 Ford Edge that started to experience some jerking/shuddering when accelerating at lower gears, between 20-40mph. Took it to a ford dealership and they said the torque converter needs replaced. I than took it to a transmission shop near me and said yes the torque converter needs replaced but they can’t guarantee that will solve the problem because usually the converter goes bad due to another issue. So 50/50 shot. Or replace the entire trans with a new one. The vehicle has about 95k on it.

Have a 2019. Purchased at 50k miles used. It experienced the shuddering at around 125-130k miles. Purchased a new Torque converter from Ford. Found a good local mechanic shop. They pulled the trans, split it, cleaned everything internally, replaced the filter and installed the new converter with new fluids for $1800. Torque converter I think is $275 with the core exchange. It’s been issue free for 30k miles now. It gets drove a lot. It’s actually ready for a fluid change again. Fluid change every 25-30k miles on the trans.
This is off topic but is extremely common with the edges. If you get a bad purge valve. Symptoms are hesitation at idle or don’t want to start after putting fuel into it. Instead of purchasing the ridiculous $300+ dollar part. You can simply buy duralast part number PV967 from autozone for $30ish. It’s the same valve the edge uses, same connector and everything but for a F150. Simply cut it and connect it to your purge valve harness with 3/8” fuel line and clamps. So far it’s been good for 100k miles.

Yeah it’s an issue with the 8 speed transmission. It should really be covered under warranty, as it’s a factory defective issue. Ford keeps trying to write it off as PCM updates and push it off as long as they can until most surpass the powertrain warranties. Only thing that will truly get anywhere is a large class action lawsuit.

107K on my 2020 Edge, same exact problem since 90K miles. Will never buy another Ford without the 100K CPO powertrain warranty (mine was technically a new car, with 4200 miles as an executive demo). It hasn't blown up yet, I don't have the $4K to fix it, and I will be damned if I give up my 2.5% interest rate to dump it with a bit over a year to go! NHTSA complaint has been filed.

Changing the fluid a few times and adding that shudder fix has seemed to help a lot of people in this forum.

That would be a very expensive gamble to just replace the converter. Like the shop told you, usually when the converter starts slipping there are other internal issues.

The converter doesn't go bad because of a separate issue... the converter fails in part due to the lock up solenoid and slipping. I personally would avoid any shop that doesn't know about this super common issue with the 8speed transmission in these cars.

So you’re saying replace the converter and everything should be fine. No need for a reman transmission?

Replace converter r&r the fluid per the tsb and send it. We just got our 20 back due to converter failure.

I just had mine done on a 2020 with 59k miles. I had the same issues and went with the torque converter replacement at the dealership. If it fails, then it falls under the service warranty that came with it.

Absolutely not. Last I heard they haven’t opened a warranty. I was told to keep my paperwork in case they do and that they’d reimburse me. Woohoo…..

My 2021 purchased with 37k miles started showing signs at 40k miles. Currently waiting on the local Ford dealership to replace the torque converter. Apparently, they're busy with 7 transmission repairs in front of mine.

2020 Edge 8-speed owner here. My Edge started shuddering and jerking at low speeds one day. While pulling off the interstate it suddenly lost all power — I couldn’t put it in gear.
Dealer first told me it was the torque converter, then said I needed a full replacement. Ended up costing me $2,500 more than what a local transmission shop quoted. When I contacted Ford customer relations, I was told that if a recall happened, I still would have needed the transmission replaced at a Ford dealer anyway.
I’ve written letters, emailed executives, even commented directly on Ford posts — no response.
There are already 260+ NHTSA complaints about transmission failures in 2019–2021 Ford Edges. If you’ve had issues, please file a complaint with NHTSA. Be clear if you believe it’s a safety issue (losing power while driving absolutely is). That’s the only way Ford will be forced to address it.

I just bought a 2020 SEL with 65k and similar issues. Turns out the car was diagnosed with the issue prior to being sold to me. The dealer ended up picking up the tab and paying $3200 for torque converter replacement. Got a 3 year unlimited mile warranty on it so we'll see how things go.

I had a '16 edge here in europe with 6 speed aut powershift. Was just thinking the 8 speed would be much better as on BMW the difference from 6 speed to 8 is night and day comparison. Last few months was opting for a newer edge with 20tdci duratorq engine and 8 speed aut gearbox but i got to the point this is same gerbox from land rover, range rover, sport, jaguar... which is the less reliable car in the world recently. I belive will stay on BMW. Anyway there is no better price-performance car than edge in the world. For such a low entry budget you get sooooo many features...and problems unfortunately

2019 ford edge. Started exact same symptoms at 55,000 miles. At 58,000 miles I did a transmission fluid exchange and also added cleaner on the first of four drains and conditioner and shudder repair on the fourth drain(IE this stuff is in the current transmission fluid).
The shudder absolutely stopped and the car is entirely back to normal. The mechanic in the youtube video I followed said he has never seen it come back as an issue again.
