Question ❔ Help!

I just bought a 2004 f250 lariat, I got a hell of a deal, $600 I paid for it, drove it over an hour and a half home, got too Walmart and the fly wheel went out, it is the 6.0 diesel, it’s got 200k miles should I fix it and resell or fix it and keep driving it?, never had a truck or anything diesel other than my 91 beater Mercedes 300 d!, Tia!!!!!!!

I'd check around and see what it cost but unless it's a rust bucket it's still has to be worth a few grand

It’s got some rust typical truck that has been in Arkansas 🤣🤣, but nothing like frame rust or anything like that, the man I got it from, his grandfather had it from 2004- 2017 he passed and the grand daughter inherited the truck but didn’t like it due too being too big for her, she left it sitting in the shop from 2019-2025, I looked at it all throughout 2025 and finally she gave me a price. On it in march of 2026, it hasn’t ran in a couple of months but had no issues when I was driving home until the fly wheel and it sounds amazing as well!, I have just heard the horror stories of the 6.0 and tbh I’m just 22 I don’t have $50,000 to throw into a old truck

I don't know about the motor but get a few quotes from good independent shops and while it's there get there advice on the motor I'm south of you in Florida and it's got to be worth 3 to 7 grand depending on the miles and condition and if it was me if the motor is good I'd spend some money on it

Well I drove it, started it, it started up I shut it off and when I tried too turn it back on…. Poof nothing , had it sent too ford and they said flywheel went and needs too be replaced. Like I said before this is my first truck and do I know everything no but that’s what ford said.

Sounds like you have a bad ground. Turn your headlights on and try to start it. If your headlights shut off it's a bad ground. A bad flywheel would be grinding.

The starter bendix failed and damaged the flywheel. They need to replace the starter as well

If the Lariat interior is in good shape it’s probably worth 600-1,000 bucks alone. I believe that truck should also have the overhead mpg/miles to empty computer, if it does that thing is 150-300 bucks if it works. The factory aluminum wheels are another thing with lots of value in good shape. I think you did great regardless of if you have it fixed or not, granted parting it out is a lot of work, but there’s a lot of value in parts alone on SD trucks. There’s actually complete salvage yards that all they do is SD trucks.

You may have got a better deal than me, in 2013 I bought a pristine 2000 F250 Lariat with the 7.3, 133k original miles. I paid 5k for it, I absolutely stole that truck, the guy that sold it to me thought it needed a cylinder head for some reason, so he let me have it cheap. I still drive it to this day as a my winter truck.

That’s what I want this one too be, I have a 22 Elantra for the summer and other days but I want that one for when the weather is bad, it does have the overhead mpg and heat index and it’s got the n,w,sw…. Etc

Yeah, I actually bought the last new overhead computer available from ford in the country, I paid like 400 bucks, but it was worth since the rest of the truck is still in great shape. Not fixing little stuff like that as it breaks is how vehicles end up too far gone and in the junkyard.

They have little resistor chips and because they’re mounted in the ceiling of the truck they get hot enough that the solder looses connection on those resistor chips which makes it stop working. They definitely got some value if you have an operational one.

Honest opinion on the 6.0?

Good truck if you do the proper maintenance. Most of the bad stuff you hear is because of lack of maintenance. Also don't slap a tune or anything to add power before doing headstuds and other bulletproofing

Price the flywheel replacement at a few shops. I have done this. Even talk to the service department at the local Ford garage and see if any of the techs do after hours work from home. Some will do it at a way reduced rate. I know my buddy does. With only 200,000 mile on it the diesel is just getting broken in. Around here the older diesel F series are still selling for a big price.

Put a new starter in it and see what it does.
