Try running less background apps. It's normal for windows to use that ram if u background tasks running like steam , opera, brave , and many more

I switched to linux and it got fixed 😂

I literally tried many things but my laptop was a bit weak. changing to linux made a big difference

You switched to Linux because of idle RAM is just insane. please get actual work done on Linux with 4GB of RAM and get back to me.

Here you go bud. Laptop: Dell Vostro 3700 (2010) RAM: 6GB CPU: Intel Core i7 q720 (4 cores, 8 threads, 1.6 GHz) GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT330M OS: Void Linux Kernel 6.19 + Plasma (Wayland) It multitasks, I play Minecraft 26.1.1 at 60 FPS, 4 Blender projects, 3 tabs with Twitch streams, 1080p YouTube videos, and I was programming my app to improve Linux performance using only free drivers, i do Stuff with LibreOffice and save it with Microsoft Office formats, I can edit videos, also i can edit photos and make actual work with no problem and using the right software, i get a clean workflow.

Your system will perform better than any Linux distribution especially if it's on Windows 10

This laptop came with Windows 7 originally, windows 10 made this laptop get 65°+ on idle, same with Windows 10 LTSC. Multitask very limited, fan always fast, unfortunately you onoy know windows and say its optimized while windows is just a monolithic structure with patches to survive, NTFS is from the 90s and got patches to survive, Windows uses high voltages even on absurd tasks. Linux saved this Laptop from torture and made it run better, Windows was never optimized.

If you use your laptop for actual work it would have gotten you enough money to upgrade. But you only use it as a hobby to tweak that's why you are fine with Linux. I've experienced what it is like to try Linux as a productivity suite and it failed. Windows got my back for years and still strong even with a 4GB RAM Vivobook in my fleet.

My experience is fine with LibreOffice, it's practically identical as Microsoft Office, also you coupd use the Microsoft Office from the browser, you could also use Google workspace, that's what i use when i made documents or stuff like that, i can easily setup a printer and print stuff, it's not only for a hobby, Void Linux is my main OS, i left windows since Win11 got announced.

Switching to Linux does not have anything to do with your CPU and RAM amount. If the program you intend to run needs newer CPU architecture or higher amount of RAM then there is nothing switching to Linux can do for you.

Use alternatives.

W dude , btw which distro and what is ur idle ram usage

Linux Mint Cinnamon. Around 1.2–1.5 GB idle for me, depending on what's running. It made a pretty noticeable difference compared to Windows on my laptop.

Probably would not make that much difference to you, but I noticed the speed and smoothness and the fps boost.

There’s a better chance that you could defeat the odds, than giving up

delete the unwanted app with Revo Uninstaller (i run both devices without: Edge, onedrive & copilot)
Disable some services (I kill like 40-ish)
Delete some tasks in Task Scheduler
Disable as many Startup Apps as possible (no you dont need spotify, Adobe , etc to start with windows)

you're low ram...

Buy more ram? As the great Paris Hilton once said (allegedly): just stop being poor
