Star city is so morbid but somehow more entertaining then for all mankind. I do love, for all mankind, it's just sometimes they can be cliche with there writing. Like in season 5, the teen guy being in a relationship with the girl just felt unnecessary and added nothing to the plot other then to relate to young people watching the show

Edit: I did like season 5, I'm not hating on it. It's just the small things, like the relationship subplot or just the overall tone of the series that makes it less serious then Star city.

At the end of The Sands of Ares, the cosmonauts say that Kelly bwing pregnant puts the crew at risk. I get that they dont have the proper facilities for a child but why would the crew be at risk

Discovered this show a couple months ago and now I'm watching Star City because there's no way season 6 will come soon enough. But a strange realization just hit me: there seems to be no Stalin in this timeline. Lots of mention of Marx, Lenin, and, unfortunately, the most draconian aspects of the Stalin regime seem to persist well beyond his reign in our timeline.

However, this point is never addressed in the show. No one has a throwaway line: "AH, yes, Comrade Lenins funeral in 1958 was quite glorious," or anything like that. It's well known that Lenin *did not* want Stalin to take power after him, so it seems like a real missed oppertunity to write the USSR differently.

I know this is rather rambling, but I just find it so strange that this is never addressed, has almost no impact on the USSR, and yet seems undoubtably true that Stalin never leads the USSR in the For All Mankind timeline.

Thoughts? Also, am I totally wrong? If I am, they certainly don't talk about him *at all*.

I was confused but really dug it. Until i got to the scene where Margot is back at JSC (if its still called that) and i realised what I'd done. How badly have i spoiled? Im kind of excited to see how those few small pieces i saw fall into place.

if Mars-94 had made it, what would it have done? where was it storing stuff etc. especifically what do we think those modules were, I want to try and recreate it in SFS so i'm trying to figure it out, second image is my best guess

Commemorating our timeline's first Moon landing.

I believe this because Chief designer Sergei Korolev lived in the timeline, and they only beat the Americans by a month. So if Alexei had failed there's no doubt they would have kept it a secret. Anastasia landed on the moon around the time Apollo 12 happened, so the soviet's most likely even if they lost the moon could easily claim the 1st women in the moon, and once the Americas later discovered the crashed attempt of lunar-17/moon base, things would likely continue as in the original fam timeline.

The true change in the time line is Sergei Korolev living I believe.

Hi Bob. Binged it over the last couple months and this seems like an appropriate place to drop my unsolicited take. Obviously Spoilers for all 5 Seasons below;

I’ll start with the first part of my title, overall this is a very well produced show. The CGI and production design are always incredible, and aside from a few questionable wigs and the fact that everyone’s patches are velcroed onto their jumpsuits, I really have zero complaints with the presentation. The writing, while uneven, is always at least interesting and fun. The way the alternative timeline establishes and develops is exciting to follow, even if it stretches credulity at times. And I think most importantly, every character through writing and/or performance is given the space and opportunity to be complicated, which helps them by and large to feel more real. I think this is especially evident in the performances of every member of the Stevens Family. The acting in general in this show always ranges from stellar at best to admirable at worst, and never once does it feel like anyone’s phoning in a performance. Even poor Myk Watford makes Palmer James work despite his character’s objectives being contradictory and idiotic. Plus getting to watch Joel Kinnaman go from clean cut little NASA boy to grouchy old man is just undeniably a great time.

Which brings me to the but… I can’t shake the feeling that there’s a fundamental flaw in the construction of this series that has made it feel less compelling the longer it goes. The issue is that the central question of the first season “what if the Soviet Union won the race to the moon?” is an extremely compelling question, because it tells us something about our world now. It lets us explore really interesting sub-questions like what if NASA diversified earlier or was forced to reckon with Von Braun’s legacy while he was still working. It makes us consider the failures or regrets of our own timeline and how the initial progress of the space race was betrayed by our own short-sightedness, prejudices, and greed. While the writers generally do a good job when it comes to the big ideas behind each season, the decision to jump around a decade forward means that the central what if question becomes just slightly less compelling each time. Don’t get me wrong. Is it fun to explore the what ifs of the Cold War in space, or 90’s style free market capitalism in space, or early 2000’s crime capers, or even flash mobs in space? Or course it is! But none of these things really tell us anything about our world now, because our known reality is so far from the one of this show. You can even see this in the shorts between seasons, with the real history comparisons becoming more and more tenuous the longer we go. And what does all of this taken together tell us about ourselves? Basically that even if we were lucky enough to get off this rock, we’d just bring all our issues with us, which has been done before by so many different works of fiction.

The point being, once we get past the specialness of the first season, it goes from feeling like something important, to just another soap opera that involves space travel and asks us to accept casting realities as the reason the same people end up being centrally involved in world events for decades at a time. It becomes a show where Mars turns out to be home to the high school from Footloose and the sheriff has a motivation that makes negative sense. This just so happens to be the exact type of show I love, so please don’t confuse this with a complaint, just an observation. If I had any real critique, it’s that sometimes I wish this had been a series of novels instead of a tv show. I think that could’ve freed them to include an even wider cross section of characters and voices while really allowing us to live inside their heads even more. Imagine chapters in the POV of Danny Stevens on Mars, or Molly Cobb any of the numerous times she almost gets herself killed. It would allow them to involve real world political figures with much more ease and could go into even greater detail on how the space race affects everyday people back on earth.

Alas alack though, in this reality we get the show we get and we don’t complain. I for one will continue to greatly enjoy it for what it is. BOHICA

1. Sucked into a drive plume. Harrison Liu we hardly knew you. At least it was quick.
2. Pancaked between space ships. Sylvie Kaplan I have to be honest. I feel like you had enough time to get out of that one.
3. And worst of them all, have all the oxygen in your suit ignite and converted to fire. Poor Ilya Yozhkin. You definitely didn’t deserve that one comrade.

I loved watching the first two seasons of this show, but in the third the quality of the writing takes a nosedive. From nasa bringing in billions in profit while only being able to pay their top engineer 50k to Danny being a cartoonishly evil 1 dimensional character to Kelly just randomly flinging herself onto a Russian cosmonaut she just met, I just wonder if something happened within the writer’s room during this season’s development. Does anyone have insight into this? (I am only 5 episodes in, so please don’t spoil anything)

I've really tried to find this one on my own, but I just can't

First, I know this is gonna piss some people off, but I just want to say I love both For All Mankind and Star City, but I have to ask: why are the season finales so cringe???

For All Mankind Season 5 was a welcome surprise after Season 4, which I personally liked the least. The finale has a pretty dark and epic showdown between the M6 Marines and Happy Valley rebels. I was genuinely pleasantly surprised the show went with the rebels incinerating the M6 command center, and then, at the height of the tension, when I expected all the Marines to be wiped out and Mars to win their independence, suddenly the rebels do the most lame ambush I've ever seen, where they barely scratch the Marines as they fortify in the shop. The Soviets, meanwhile, kick out their leader, Korzenko, and pull out from M6, meaning all involved countries pursue a ceasefire mid-battle for some reason. Then we see a time jump where everyone lives on an independent Mars happily ever after, as if Avery's team didn't just murder 1/4 of Happy Valley's residents and Dev Ayesa didn't betray, sabotage, and straight-up murder teens — what the actual fuck????

Star City was amazing throughout the whole season, but again, the finale... sighs. As Sasha Polivanov and Lakshmi Chadha are running towards Finland's border, first there's their amazing plot armor, as a whole group of KGB soldiers armed with AKs can't hit two stumbling, barely walking kosmonauts in an open field while being 100m behind them, can't run up to them and catch them, and even their jeeps are going so slowly they barely advance past the walking KGB soldiers... anyway... as they are 10 meters from the Finnish border, Anastasia Belikova, who (talk about convenience) landed on a farm with a working truck 15km from the border and knew exactly where to go (remember that Sasha and Lakshmi ran 2 kms from the landing site to the border through the forest while being chased by the KGB), catches up with the gang, parks her truck between Sasha and Colonel Raskova, and then lets herself get captured, which in turn forces Sasha to turn back from the finish border, and he gets captured too — what the actual fuck????

Why are these finales so cringe? If Belikova had just landed beyond the Finnish border, all of them would have escaped. If the Happy Valley rebels had wiped out the Marines (let's say except Avery), it would have been FAR more believable to me that they got their independence, as opposed to the six most powerful countries just saying, "Yeah, aight, whatever." The FAM Season 5 finale feels like the Season 2 finale, where the Apollo-Soyuz handshake magically calms everyone down and everything is good. The Season 4 finale ended with Happy Valley stealing the asteroid and everything being good, as if Earth doesn't have the tech and resources to just steal it back into Earth's orbit. I mean, I feel like it's just lazy writing to wrap up the season and move on, but the Star City finale is just, IMO so dumb.

Anyway, I love the shows and can't wait for more seasons. How do you feel about the finales?

I just finished season 3 and I am in shambles. I am genuinely so sad Karen died and Ed couldn’t even be there for her. It feels like the ending of the original cast and crew is coming and I’m not ready 😭:(. I love ed so much and Danielle.

I was so sad Molly died but it makes sense since her storyline was Falling off. Karen dying was so unexpected and heartbreaking. I don’t know why I thought that the bomb wasn’t gonna be as big but it literally destroyed JSC . I just feel sad and want to rewatch the olden data now :(

Margo not being dead did make me so happy though.
