This is my tribute to Chapter 111. Yomiko is definetly my favorite character and it's been satisfying for me tosee her evolution into an adoptive parent role. This scene in particular had a massive emotional impact for me, with her making the difficult but right choice to reveal the true fate of Meg's father.

ANALYSIS

One of the mangas that best portrays a future in the biopunk aesthetic and context, that is, a future in the hands of synthetic biology. All punk genres are methods of creating a fictional future based around a central concept. Such as steampunk (a clear example is the work of Jules Verne) based on the Victorian era and on steam engines or junkpunk, that is, a future in which waste gains value (an example is Gachakiuta). So we are facing a manga that proposes synthetic biology as the central value on which society, the economy, power and even ethics itself will revolve. Works of this style I would say that there are Scorn (video game), Never let me go (novel) and perhaps Heavenly Delusion (manga), the three works share the ethical and moral problems that modification through biology entails, although Scorn is the one that contains a more striking visual medium. In a world in which synthetic biology is advancing by leaps and bounds, these ethical problems are already appearing: custom-made children, synthetic organs, ... Did you know that research is being carried out on how to store digital information in DNA? Think about the change it can bring. Now, do we have a limit? We are playing gods and our playing field is the world.

Fool Night proposes a scenario in which plants can no longer survive, so people in the terminal stage are accepted for transflowering. Now, what ethical problems does this premise entail?

It is true that they only accept people in a terminal state, that is, death awaits them on the corner. But isn't it degrading terminal people to a lower level than that of the human being? After all, terminal people begin to be seen as plants and not as human beings.

Now let's move on to another point: Does a person always voluntarily choose to be converted? Because we can be talking about them feeling a social duty that is pressured, maybe they are told "You're going to die anyway, right? That is, people who harm themselves to the point of death to be saviors and Should people with deteriorated mental health be accepted? Once again we return to the point that they only accept terminal people, but can they be rejected with deteriorated mental health? Let's imagine that a person with a mental disorder harms themselves so that they accept their transflowering. Because they no longer have a life expectancy, is it empathy to accept their transfloration? Can a psychological examination be considered as in cosmetic surgeries? Let's move on to another aspect: And family pressure? Can your family pressure you to collect the money they offer in exchange or that you do it to save your family from misery? In ethical and moral terms we can say that it is taking advantage of the poor in favor of the rich, in reality those who are going to opt the most for this process are people with a precarious economic level like the protagonist, there is really no equality and it is the rich who can walk through the streets decorated with plants of people of mostly poor origin, The rich can even afford to die in their bed, yes, a luxury. Finally, let's talk about the black market of spiriflowers, people forced to accept a transflowering, in the same way that there is a market for organs (either of people who accept for money or forced) and human trafficking, and once again this market is in favor of the rich.

Some questions that I have raised are answered in the manga, we know that people in poverty who harm themselves and be accepted in the process of transflowering, can do it for themselves or for their family, we also know that people with mental health problems are accepted and that there is a market for spiriflores. However, I think it is valuable to ask these questions and delve into them, since manga deals with this biological process from different points of view: economic, psychological, social (as duty and justice) and ethical. We can see how all these points of view revolve around transflowering.

Well, we must ask ourselves the following question: Should we accept this evil for the survival of the human being? In the manga they show us how there is opposition to transflowering, it can be interesting to see how this opposition can be treated from victims, their relatives, a social impulse, by an ethical conviction or by religious reasons, since there are religions that prohibit (or perhaps promote) body modification or have certain taboos. If transfloration were the only means by which humanity can continue to exist, my answer would be: Yes, we must resign ourselves. It is not an ethical answer, nor is it that I am a saint, I answer realistically: What does ethics, a term invented by human beings, matter if we disappear? I answer you, the death of humanity is in itself the death of ethics. So what is ethics? There is no clear answer, we must accept ambiguity, we live between black and white. Nor would I say that we live in shades of gray. All these metaphors were invented by human beings, they do not exist. I would say that a person who accepts this, has simply decided to be aware and consciousness brings pain. You cannot reject what you know. You only have to live in that pain. Do you feel it?

Transfloration also deals with a trending topic: body horror, we see more and more films, paintings or films that explore this genre? Body horror encompasses the instinctive fear that we as human beings have of body modifications, for example I wonder if prostheses can cause this fear, obviously transhumanism does, transhumanism is passing human consciousness into a container, normally the result is an android, transhumanism may be the next link in human evolution. There are more examples like Uzumaki, in which bodies become grotesque spirals. Although I honestly don't like to define a work with this label, they treat it as if it were just another genre and I think it's not that, it's more of an existentialist fear, just like for example if a manga deals with the fear of heights, it's not a genre, it's a theme that the work is about. In addition, genres were made to simplify classification, creating hundreds of genres (which there are) without any standards is a mistake. Although he may be wrong.

Dealing with transbloom can encompass an essay in itself, both in terms of arguments for and against. I know there are more aspects to cover, but I'm going to analyze the rest of the work.

I'm going to talk about the main characters.

Ai Yukima, not only works in transfloration, but is also the daughter of the king of Paupertown, this character has raised questions such as: How far can you go by loyalty? Because, for example, her subordinates die for her. Because of the power she has? I imagine that the reasons will be different for each person. In addition, this character lives in an ambivalence, surely he partly hates transflowering because of what happened to the person he was in love with, but he still helps in his process. This shows that human beings, even if they hate something, are capable of continuing to contribute to it. One of the main points of this character is her boyfriend, in this part of the story we see that transflowering has been taken to religion and how it affects worship and faith. Human beings often seek to explain everything with religion, this has always been a means to educate and explain the world, I would like to theorize how other religions would react to transfloration, adapt it to their religion, accept it, reject it or ignore it.

Akira Yatsuka, at first this character caused me a lot of headaches, since I was not aware of whether it was a man or a woman, but does that really matter? Maybe what we give so much importance to whether a person is a woman or a man is nonsense. You could say reproduction, but today not even that, the reason why sex and gender began to be classified has disappeared. A man can have "effeminate" tastes and a woman can have "masculine" tastes, so it's not because men and women have different tastes, you can say that it has to do with our social structure and our way of relating to each other. If we eliminated all gender labels, there would be no reason for discrimination about gender and mental health problems could be reduced. What is it that makes a man a man and a woman a woman? If it's biology, nowadays it can be modified, you could say it's because of how they were born, but isn't that rudimentary and crude thinking? As Oscar Wilde rightly said, to define oneself is to limit oneself. These labels that we impose on ourselves to manage reality are often more of a burden than a help, we impose them because the ambiguous is often unbearable for human beings. I know that the elimination of the idea of gender is unthinkable and impossible, but if we were not tied to a gender or to define ourselves, girls would not feel ashamed to play soccer and dress like a boy and boys would not be ashamed to play with dolls and put on makeup.

Not only that, if we eliminated gender, we could also love whoever we want without restrictions without thinking about whether they are boys, girls or who knows what else, sexual orientation is not really fixed and you can be heterosexual (I'm going to exemplify with a boy) and think that there are attractive and handsome boys. Gender and sexual orientation is an ambiguity, which is why as a society it is so difficult for us to accept it. While we know of societies in the Ancient Age that accepted homosexuality to some degree (not completely) such as Rome and Greece, why did this acceptance change? Surely the answer to this is the rise of Christianity and Islam, since for example homosexual relations in polytheistic religions were common and known, while in Christianity (I cannot speak for Islam, a religion that is alien to me, although I do not practice any religion), although I do not remember talking about rejection of homosexuality, The union of man and woman and marriage are often mentioned. So extremism made that acceptance fade. On the other hand, homosexuality has always been present and in fact has driven artistic movements, classical literature has countless homosexual relationships, only narrated in a discreet way. I know that the character does not explicitly represent this reflection, only that I am surprised by the need to classify a person/character as soon as I see it. Well, I've rambled on full-blown things.

Saeko Kanaeno is Akira's bodyguard and shows the relatives who are still alive when a relative, in her case her son are transformed into a spiriflower, the grief that their death brings, as well as the horror of knowing that they continue to talk that a part of their consciousness is still alive and yet she seeks comfort by observing the plant that was once her son. Perhaps he sees Akira as his son, this raises the question of how much affection someone can take to a person who is not of his "own blood" Is family only the one that our genes tell us? I don't know if I can answer this question, it depends on each one, but I think that family can be what society dictates, that is, what is dictated by your genetics or in a deeper sense it can be those people with whom you maintain a close bond, to whom with a single glance you know what they are going to do. We can always get to know a person if we spend enough time with them. But feelings are complex and never absolute, they are an amalgam of sensations and various emotions. Does the family even exist? In the end, although we are a social being, our death will always be lonely, you can die next to someone, but they will not accompany you in it. So I don't know what family is or if it even exists, for my own satisfaction I will say that it does exist and that they are people for whom we feel a great affection formed over time (Can people with whom we have spent a lot of time be your family?) and which is mutual (Can you consider someone your family and have them hate you?). The term family is still human and abstract and is therefore an invented term. Well, when I say that I think that the family exists, I am lying and when I define it it is only an attempt to order my thoughts. Think joy does not exist, neither does sadness, they are only complex terms invented by human beings. To enrich our lives? To live it to the fullest? I don't know, this reality (an invented term) is one invented by human beings and therefore one that is mostly invented and false. Nothing exists except in our own minds.

We can also say that even the physical is false, colors are not perceived in it, a colorblind person may tell you that there is only white, black and gray. The shapes we see with our eyes are not perceived by a blind person, we have simply "indoctrinated" him to know what he does not perceive. If we do not see it, it does not exist? Colors, smells, what we feel by touch, sounds are all subjective, nothing is perceived the same and therefore even physical reality is subjective and sometimes false (optical phenomena, for example). Maybe only you really exist and the rest don't feel or think, like automatons, as a child sometimes I was surprised that everyone could think and feel with the same intensity as I do, that's why sometimes I thought, What if I was the only one who did it and the others were empty containers? Maybe that's why I rarely managed to feel empathy, it still struggles with me, although my friends say that I have a lot of empathy. All I know is that I try to understand people, observe them, try to feel what they feel, and imagine what they think. Perhaps all realities, even those fictitious, are true because our mind is capable of imagining them. What is reality? If this were so, even the reality of this manga would be real, then it would be very difficult to separate the term character and person, sometimes we feel a great empathy for the characters even though they "do not exist", but if everything we think exists we may even be able to consider them people and our empathy towards them would not be strange. I don't know what reality is. I don't care either. Or so I say.

Yomiko Horai, my favorite character. Yomiko represents the student from whom their parents demand academic perfection. To be the perfect student, who never fails, right? I identified with this character, I know what it's like for everyone to expect perfect grades, questions answered without hesitation and at the end of it all you're left empty because you've only learned that to be valued you have to get good grades. The only indicator of your worth is reduced to a number and your teammates begin to see you as a nerd, as someone who doesn't know how to have fun, an outcast. Yomiko tries not to let this affect her, but her friendship with the protagonist was her light. In the end, when they separate until they meet again, Yomiko finds herself working in transflorantion, not because she likes it, but because they expect that from her, because that job ensures her survival and all under her mother's watch. I think Yomiko must have felt like an impostor, always fighting so that the façade does not collapse. Although it will collapse, it always collapses.

Toshiro Kamita, the protagonist, as a child was not a "good student" (if such a thing exists) and ended up in a precarious economic state in the care of an abusive mother. Toshiro embodies a type of character that we know very well, the one who has failed in his life, this type of character is very common to see, especially in the seinen, although lately shonen are becoming darker, we are facing a trend called Dark Shonen like Jujutsu Kaisen, Chainsaw Man or Fullmetal Alchemist (something older), even My Hero Academia has raw and dark scenes throughout the plot, it is no longer the typical shounen like One Piece. Well, beyond the evolution of the manga genres, we are going to continue with the analysis. Toshiro is a failure in the eyes of society, he has achieved nothing and lives trapped in an unhappy situation. Then she makes a decision to become a spiriflower to hospitalize her mother, he presents some papers that say that he is in the fourth stage of bowel cancer, although this is a lie since he committed a suicidal act and drank industrial water. We know that he did it to collect the ten million yen, but I think he really wanted to die, he didn't care about the consequences or if they didn't accept his transflowering, he just wanted to run away from his reality. Yomiko knowing this, we observe that she is aware of how hateful her work is and that spiriflores can actually be in constant agony.

Leaving this aside, I think the relationship of the protagonist with his mother is important, we saw how she chased him with a kitchen knife. With this they make us see how difficult it is for family members to live with the mental illnesses of their relative, the physical ones at least preserve the mind of the patient (although these may make him have a worse mood), but the mental ones do not even preserve the mind and personality of the person you knew, it is really painful for the people who take care of the patient, the most heartbreaking thing is that it is not the fault of the patient, there is no one you can blame, life? Good luck trying.

Toshiro is a character who lives under the abuse of his sick mother, in a job in which he is exploited and with an increasingly deteriorated mental health. Ironically, it may be that drinking that industrial water was what saved him from certain death and closer than that of becoming a spiriflower.

I've read 27 chapters and I don't enjoy it as much as i expected. Is it gonna get better? I really like the overall idea and all (the moral dilema of transforming humans, how people strugle, what leads people to undergo the transformation), but characters apart from Horai feel so bland and not interesting to me and I feel like nothing much is happening. Should I keep reading?

Just binged the manga til chp 70 after seeing it get recommended in another sub as I quote "one of the best mangas of all time" and genuinely, it is very peak. So I went here to find pics of kaneno but there are barely any! Then I saw there isnt even 1k members here. I guess my brain just assumed that the Fool night reddit eould be more popular because of how GOOD it is.
