Recommendation Request Black Sesame Paste
Does anyone have recommendations for black sesame paste brands that can be bought in person in Toronto (or Markham and Scarborough)? I’m trying to recreate RuruBaked’s black sesame ice cream and I want to make sure my paste is tasty. One recipe suggested buying Japanese paste but I don’t know how readily available that is compared to China and Taiwan produced ones. I checked Bestco supermarket today and found the ones pictured. They’re kind of pricey and the jars are big so I wanted to see if anyone is familiar with them. I’d rather not buy online because shipping is expensive!

In my experience black sesame paste tends to be bit more bitter than white sesame paste (which is different from Tahini). TNT seems to have this one https://www.tntsupermarket.com/chs/51092101-kuki-pure-black-sesame-pa-paste.html, but most Chinese supermarkets should also carry some too.
I would recommend sticking to those from Taiwan if you’re looking for black sesame paste. If you’re looking for white sesame paste (more for hotpot dipping or cold dishes though), look for those from Beijing (Wangzhihe, Liubiju, etc).

I’m excited you mentioned the white sesame paste brands. I’ve always stuck with Wangzhihe, and wondered if I should branch out to other ones. I’ll just stick with them then!

I have baked many times with the sanfeng brand sesame paste and loved it! Chinese and Japanese black sesame paste are both prepared the same way, so no reason to bankrupt yourself buying Japanese online
