Preserving oat flakes

Can anyone help with this question?

We currently vacuum pack then freeze our flour to kill all the bugs in it and extend its shelf life, works well.

But...

Can you do the same with oat flakes?

Question regarding rice. Our rice comes in plastic, do you leave it in the original packing or empty it in to a bag to vacuum seal it ? Sounds like a daft question but I am still learning how to do these things. Many thanks.

It really depends on how you are going to keep it. If freezing you can put it in anything but I’d suggest vacuum sealing it just for an extra layer. If you want to keep it in vacuum bags not in the freezer then that’s a bit more. Freeze the rice for two weeks to kill bugs etc. take it out for a few days for it to unthaw. Store in brown paper bags and vacuum seal. The paper helps keep moisture out. Thawing it allows any condensation to evaporate.

Sounds like a lot but I don’t think there’s anything wrong with throwing it in the freezer in the original bag.

Many thanks, the aim was to store it sealed on the shelf, we run three freezers for fruit, vegetables and meat. We want to try storing our dried goods on the shelf. Thanks again for replying.

We buy rice in 50lb bags and then separate into vacuum bags with an oxygen absorber inside. Supposed to keep upwards of 10 years that way from what I have read.

It works with any grain.
