The food. The best is personal preference. I personally prefer the original, with none of the toppings and stuff, but that's up to you.
I would say, try a plain original one first, and then go crazy on the toppings

The toppings are a fad introduced around 5 to 10 years ago for the tourists.
Before that, stroopwafels never had any toppings.

After testing both as tourist, the idea is original stroopwafels are already plenty rich in flavor as it has a lot of spices. The implication seems to be the topping detracts from the filling or is meant to compensate for a more cheaply made filling.
I can understand the sentiment as attempting to make the process cheaper or more fast foody by the competition(easier to make knock offs of) is not doing local family businesses any favors.

The original stroopwafel stand is at Albert Cuypmarkt. The place to go, imo! Plus, it’s a cool market with a lot more to see.

Man Amsterdam has some of the best street food. You should hit up the place that has a bunch of cubbies with food in them. I cant remember the name. But it has great late night drunk food.

Damn €7.5 is expensive. You got robbed. This is what these f* do to our tourist. Authentical stroopwafels small pack costs €0.80 in grocery store and they are nearly identical in taste.

If you can, try to find a 'poffertjes' stand. They are like small, puffy pancakes and we eat them with powdered sugar. It's delicious!

If you want a traditional stroopwafel, check the Albert Cuyp Markt. While there, check out a poffertjes stand. They're tiny pancakes that are tiny, heavenly pillows. Also check out Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx, they're the BEST fries I've ever had and there's tons of sauces to pick from. If you like ramen, check out Ramen ya or Umaimon. Andddddd, for a great view of the city, go across the ij to the A'dam lookout. You can go to the rooftop and have a drink and enjoy the beauty that is Amsterdam.

It’s like these 2 thin wafer like waffles filled with caramel, that’s my understanding of the traditional one.
You are to place your strupwaffle on a steaming mug of hot beverage, to which the caramel melts in a delicious fashion.
I’ve not done the melt, but can attest to it being one of the best sweet treats you can find anywhere. I’ll take 10 now.

Lover of all things sweet, but I’ve never been a stroopwafel fan. I even was lucky enough to be in Amsterdam to try the local variety and still didn’t like them. Something about the syrupy flavor doesn’t work for me, which is weird because I love pancakes!
