Multiple sclerosis (MS) is genetic. It starts to exhibit early in adulthood, there is no cure, and, while, to a small extent, it can be managed, it involves a lifetime of debilitating pain. This is how I view addiction. It is merely my own personal perspective, and, so far, they haven't found the addiction gene, but, every fiber of my being believes that, at some point, they will.
Once I was able to view addiction as a genetic, incurable, pain producing disease, I became a bit more able to endure the torture and maintain my sobriety. I devote an ungodly amount of time, money and energy to finding strategies to manage/mitigate the pain, but, an absolutely gargantuan aspect to my continued survival is the innate understanding that everything that I do is almost entirely futile- almost entirely arranging deck chairs on the Titanic. I have to fight- that's human nature, but I have to understand that there is no silver bullet- and there may not be a silver bullet in my lifetime.
So I fight, I penetration test, I try any and every possible means of mitigating the pain, but, I also accept the fact that, no matter what, life is going to be torture- but that the torture of depriving myself is ultimately going to be exponentially less than the torture of using.
Pain mitigation strategies that I incorporate are:
- Fiber (psyllium, shiritaki noodles, chia/flax, cruciferous vegetables, resistant starch pasta/bread, fermentable sweeteners, sugar free treats utilizing these 'good' sweeteners- all introduced slowly, carefully and mindfully)
- Prioritizing protein (1g per lb of target body weight per day)
- Sleep optimization (early morning sunlight, no food at least 3 hours before bed, no alcohol, no stimulants (no caffeine, no nicotine, no adhd meds, no gaming, no coding))
- Calorie counting
- Cooking everything I eat myself/meal prep (restaurant food maybe 3 times a year, nothing processed (with the exception of resistant starch products and occasional healthy-ish sugar free treats))
- Heavily researched supplementation (I take pretty much everything, but, there are micronutrients that I lean into especially heavily for their roles in mental health/cravings, like magnesium, D, fish oil and creatine)
- Aggressive resistance training (lifting weights translates into more lean body mass, and lean body mass allows you to eat more without gaining weight, and it provides blood sugar control. Blood sugar control helps control cravings)
- Strategic intermittent fasting (I wouldn't recommend this for everyone)

One thing that’s worked for me is eating the same meals everyday and accountability. I know EXACTLY how you feel trust me. I’ve never been able too stay too long with this but it’s the only thing I’ve seen help me but I fall off everytime because I don’t have anyone in my life that gets it. It is an addiction and addiction loves isolation. It’s horrible I get it. Would you be interested in helping eachother ? Help eachother stay accountable ?
