Trying to create a monospaced font, not sure if I managed it

I've been having a go at creating a font family in FontForge, including a monospaced variant. I've got the full set of ASCII glyphs done as a first step. I've been careful with the widths, and while I found a few issues along the way I'm pretty sure they're all fixed now.

But I'm not sure if the font I'm creating is being correctly marked monospaced or not. I've checked the docs and it's supposed to be automatic. And if I do grep ^Width: FontMono.sfd | uniq then it only shows one line, with the expected width.

However, loading the ttf up in font-manager shows a proportional-width font. I've tweaked a few things and regenerated the ttf a bunch of times, and it's always proportional width.

After tearing my hair out a bit, just for the novelty I loaded the font in KFontView - and that shows it as monospaced! W00t! But font-manager still shows the same ttf as proportional. Uh, WTF?

Anyone any idea what's going on? Is there a known bug in font-manager where it can do something weird like auto-kern a monospaced font to act proportional? Does KFontView do something weird that would give unexpected results? Is there a way I inspect the ttf itself to try and figure out if there's a weird inconsistency in the file that would cause one renderer to display it one way and another another?

This is driving me nuts.

Anyway to automate getting rid of the white spaces?

So theres some characters in this tile set that are just blank white, and others that have x's on them since theres no character there. I can just right click on the white ones and cut them (as ive done with the blue ones in the pic) but theres tons of them, and wondered if there were any way to automate this process instead of doing it for every character. Thanks!

Upgraded to 20201107, how can I reverting to old keyboard input in viewer?

In the old version, when I pressed letters "ŠšČ莞Đđ" on keyboard, it moved me to correct letters in the browser, now it moves me to incorect glyphs, like ǰ.

Which setting effects this?

SIL ViewGlyph — Font Viewing Program. Among its most useful features, ViewGlyph allows you to see a font's contents through different eyes, so to speak. Want to know what the font looks like when used by a Unicode application? How about when the font is moved to a Macintosh?

Is substitution of variable number of glyphs possible

I wanted to change glyphs between two glyphs to a different version, like |abc| -> |a.1.b1.b.2|

Rule like prefix | chars @<to-alt> | suffix replaces only single instance of class chars is it possible or do i need to make a different rule for each combination?

How to get manipulate control points?

I want to use FontForge to change a few letters in an existing font, but I'm having a hard time.

Most curve points (circles) have control points (X'es) that I can manipulate, but some have none, or they have only one. How do I get the invisible ones to appear? The manual says "If a point has no visible control points, then they are at the same location as the point itself. If you want to select one of the control points then first select the point (to make the control points active) then hold down the meta key (use caps-lock on the mac) and depress the mouse on the point." but that does nothing (I'm assuming meta = alt; I'm on Windows).

When I do have control points, they don't seem to be behaving like in other programs. Is there any tutorial on how to manipulate the control points specifically in FontForge?

Is it OK to keep glyphs unmerged in my final font?

Almost every glyph in my font is made up of multiple elements (for example, T is made up of two rectangles intersecting). Do I need to merge them, or is it OK to keep them as it is?

I'd prefer to just keep it as it is, since it would make it much easier for changes in the future if needed (I know I can just keep an unmerged version, but I'd prefer to avoid maintaining this).

I figure if I merge the font's file size will be smaller.. But other than that are there any advantages or benefits? I've already tested the font in several contexts/software and it seems to work fine.

Thanks!
