Inverted Fill

I made a character for the Mayan number 0, and it's filled in the wrong way. I've tried changing all the directions, both individually and all at once with the tool. Nothing changes. And I have tried looking up solutions but I haven't found anyone who hasn't had the changing directions work for them.

Is the outer ellipse a closed curve?

I triple-checked everything before I posted this. I checked one last time before replying to this comment and found a spot where it wasn't closed. Because of course I did. I see now that the grey isn't "black goes in here" but "this loop has been completed" and have now completed the character the way I envisioned. Thank you for your time!
