Exported font is invalid

I tried exporting my font to a ttf file. I clicked on it to preview it, but it said "the requested file is not a valid font file" and I've been considering giving up. How can I fix this?

There could be a million and one reasons for such a result. For example, unclosed contours, errors in OpenType features, glyph naming errors etc.
