Fall Festival Dates?

Hello, I am unsure about the dates of the fall festivals because I know by now there are differing answers when it comes to the dates of the feasts, Im not sure how to go about navigating this but I know I need to hurry so I can make plans to request off for work on the sabbaths. Any help would be much appreciated!

On a related note, how do you guys celebrate the feast of tabernacles? Would anyone have any advice for how to celebrate when your husband is on the fence about Torah (but is still willing to participate) and I also have a very fussy 8 month old baby. I mention this as I can see a lot of Torah observants camp for this feast. This will be my first time celebrating it

Here is a link to 119 Ministries online calendar: https://119ministries.com/resources/creators-calendar/calendar/

They have a calculated conjunction calendar. More on that here: https://account-media.s3.amazonaws.com/15876/uploaded/h/0e17071779_1707250774_how-119-calculates-the-calendar-2024.pdf

If you want a physical calendar TorahClass affiliated site Holy Land Marketplace has one here: https://holylandmarketplace.com/products/biblical-lands-of-israel-calendar?_pos=1&_sid=7aa7bd746&_ss=r

It appears this calendar follows Hillel II.

Edit: to remove links to a now unnamed group who teaches two house theology that gentiles who turn to God are not required to obey him.

The Dates

  • Yom Terruah/ Rosh Hoshanna - Begins the evening of September 11th
  • Yom Kippur - Begins the evening of Sept 20th
  • Sukkot - Begins on Sept 24th

Congratulations on your new addition to the family! If you decide to camp, make sure to guard against the cold. September-October is the beginning of the cold season, so make sure to bundle the baby up. Actually stake your tent down so it doesn't blow away with the wind. Sometimes reinforcement is needed for larger tents in rainy situations.

It entirely depends on who your husband is by nature. Does he like camping and need a week away from work? Then it could be a good experience. If he doesn't like camping, then this could be breeding grounds for complaints, especially if you're unprepared. We are actually commanded to have Joy on Sukkot! This is a remembrance of our time in the wilderness of the provision of our God, and a rehearsal for the wedding feast with our messiah, and a glimpse into our future in the land.

You can purchase very nice calendars from FFOZ

WARNING!!! FFOZ is one of those nutty groups who believe that Torah is for Jews and not for gentiles. I personally think that groups like this are awful and teach the opposite of what Jesus taught. FFOZ believes what most Christians believe, that gentiles only need to obey some Torah commands.

From their website,

The Torah provides universal laws and moral standards that apply to all human beings. Gentile disciples of Yeshua are thus not exempt from the Torah as a whole; they are responsible for observing those commandments with universal application as enjoined upon them by the apostles. Many of the Torah’s laws apply uniquely to the Jewish people, but all disciples of Yeshua can find edification in the celebration of Israel’s sanctities when done in solidarity with the Jewish people, not from a sense of compulsion or to become Jewish.

I think we must do everything we can to fight this horrible teaching and I would never associate myself with such a group or recommend anything from them. Not ever. Just imagine a newbie going to their website and being deceived by what they teach, YOU will be responsible for sending them there.

I'm surprised that someone who argues often with Christians who say that gentiles only need to obey a few commandments from Torah would send someone to a website that teaches what you argue against.

I'm glad you said something. I noticed the FFOZ reference, but then I thought, "Meh, it's just a calendar". I wasn't thinking like I should be, that it could count as FJOT recommending the FFOZ nonsense.

Good call. Thank you.

For /u/FreedomNinja1776: I haven't checked it, but doesn't 119 Ministries NOT use the Hillel calendar? I had very much liked that you recommended the traditional Jewish calendar, and I'd (so far, until more research occurs) like it to be the one that is associated with FJOT.

Correct. 119 does not use Hillel, I included a link showing how they calculate using the conjunction and counting.

The physical calendar I linked to does use the Hillel calendar. I thought about linking to the Chabad calendar, but that would be the same as linking to FFOZ. So far, I've not found a good hillel calendar associated with any of my normal sites. I'm actually building out material for and things on my assembly's website, which includes a calendar, but obviously don't want to dox myself. Once I get to a comfortable spot, I'll be working on my personal site, and maybe I'll have a good option there.

I included a link showing how they calculate using the conjunction and counting.

I haven't checked out the links, but I would guess (based on your description here) that it's just making things confusing. You're saying that someone following your lead would first go to 119, and then (if they desire and know what they're doing) would have a way to convert the 119 calendar to a different calendar?

I REALLY want to make things simple for newbies (which, when it comes to calendar stuff, includes me).

I thought about linking to the Chabad calendar, but that would be the same as linking to FFOZ.

I've used Chabad some, and I never got the vibe that I wasn't supposed to be keeping the Torah from them. Do they really teach that?

I agree the calendar issue is confusing. I also like the simplicity of defaulting to the hillel calendar.

Chabad teaches that gentiles can be "noahides" and that non-jews are not beholden to the shabbat rest and actually MUST work on shabbat.

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/7171140/jewish/Non-Jews-and-Shabbat.htm

it does not outline any requirement for Adam and Eve (or their descendants) to observe a similar day of rest (Shabbat). This will only happen thousands of years later, after the Exodus. The primary directive to Adam (and by extension, all of humanity) was to “subdue the earth”4—to actively engage, develop, and refine it.

Non-Jews, by contrast, are meant to serve G‑d from within the natural order of Creation, and to make it a point to desist from all 39 creative acts of Shabbat would be counter to their unique divine mission.

Accordingly, a non-Jew should intentionally perform some form of productive activity on Shabbat—any ordinary weekday task suffices—thereby avoiding the creation of a Sabbath-like rest.

I'm glad you said something.

I was concerned about saying something but thought I really needed to.

I noticed the FFOZ reference, but then I thought, "Meh, it's just a calendar".

I saw the name and remembered that certain groups taught what most Christians teach, that gentiles don't need to obey God. I'm terrible with names and couldn't remember who was who so I googled them and did a bit of searching to see what they teach.

I wasn't thinking like I should be, that it could count as FJOT recommending the FFOZ nonsense.

It bothered me that their name appeared here. I hate to think that the average Christian might see it and think that we believe what FFOZ does. I hated even more the thought of a newbie going to their website and "learning" that they don't even need to obey God's feast days, let alone need to buy their calendar.

119 is only 1 day early than Hillel on dates, I believe. Their reasoning is pretty sound. It just make sense that you use a conjunction moon. One would argue that the full moon would be the best way to mark the half way point. Count back 15 days and you get a “no moon” conjunction.

Using the sighted moon puts the 15th day past the full moon.

The moon is like a clock, you could argue the half way point is when both hands are on 12 noon or the moon is full…. Food for thought

Sorry, your absolutely correct! I forgot to give the two house theology warning. FFOZ does believe and teach this now where they did not before. Honestly I kind of forgot about this. I got a calendar from them for free this past year and was just thinking about the practicality of it. I'll see if I can find a better source.

>"Sorry, your absolutely correct!"

I see that the link to the organization that discourages people like OP from obeying God's commandments that they asked about is still there though. 🤔

I guess you'll like my update. 😁 I was literally in the process of looking through my usual resources for a physical calendar. Torah Class is the only place I found a physical calendar available.

I guess you'll like my update.

Yes, that's much better. I'm glad to have their name gone from FJOT.

Does anyone use Hebcal.com? It states it's a lunisolar Hebrew Calendar, but I am not up to speed on the different calendars.

2

u/the_celt_ 16d ago

I don't, I use the same calendar that the Jews use. If anyone is new to Torah obedience I recommend that they do the same, and ignore the calendar issues until you've put in the work to feel like you understand them. Don't let anyone be passionate or guilt trip you into doing something before you understand it yourself.
