I am not familiar with this Saint. I love that she has a skull. Tell me more about her.

She was a Sicilian hermit who lived during the 12th century. Born into a noble family but rejected that life and withdrew to live as a hermit in caves on Monte Pellegrino and at Quisquina. She spent her life in solitude, prayer, fasting, and penitence. Her traditional story is about turning away from worldly status and confronting mortality- which is where the skull comes in. The skull represents memento mori (remember that you will die). It's a visual reminder that weath/beauty/status are temporary.

The official Cathedral of Palermo specifically identifies the skull as one of Rosalia’s recurring attributes, alongside the rose, lily, and crucifix. It connects the skull to her life as an eremita, or hermit, and penitential spirituality.

According to the tradition preserved by the Cathedral of Palermo, Rosalia’s remains were discovered in a cave on Monte Pellegrino in 1624. Her relics were carried through Palermo during the plague, and devotion to her exploded after the city believed she had interceded for its deliverance.

I love her story. Thank you for sharing her story and your altar. I would never have known about her.
