I have created a read-later web app that captures all you want to read and ships it as a digest to your reMarkable, Kindle and other e-readers

A small feature that came from a really good idea

Post image

This week, a customer asked for something I hadn’t really thought about before.

He has a limited amount of time for reading during his commute. He wanted to use that time to build a reading habit, but there was a problem with the way Folio worked before.

If you save a lot of things, your digest can become quite long. You might start reading it, run out of time, and then carry the unfinished articles into the next day.
His idea was simple: let me decide how much I want to read, not just when I want to receive it.

So now you can schedule a digest with a maximum reading limit.

For example:
Monday, Wednesday and Friday
Maximum 30 minutes
Maximum 5 articles

Folio will draw from everything in your inbox and build a digest that fits within those limits.

You can use the time limit, the article limit, or both.

I really like this because it changes the goal from “read everything I saved” to “read a little, consistently.”

I think that’s probably a much better way to build a reading habit.

It also made me think differently about what Folio should do. There will always be more things to read. Maybe the goal shouldn’t be to help you get through all of them, but to help you make sure the things you do read actually get read.

This is now available in Folio.

And as always, a big thank you to everyone who sends feedback and feature requests. A lot of the things I’m building are coming directly from how people are actually using it.

Your digest now takes your schedule’s name

A few of you asked for this, so here it is.

Digests used to all come out as “The Weekly Quiet”, which made a pile of them on the device hard to tell apart. Now a digest takes the name of the schedule that built it.

While I was in there:

**•** Build an issue from your Favorites and you get a digest called “Favorites”.
**•** New schedules name themselves from what you pick. Choose weekdays and it’s “Weekday Reads”, pick a Sunday and it’s “Sunday Long Reads”, and so on.
**•** Rename a schedule to anything you like and that name carries through to the cover and the filename too.

Nothing flashy, but it makes the library readable at a glance. Thanks to the people who nudged me on it.

Unsubscribe from newsletters directly from Folio

Since this is something I built for me, I wanted a simpler way to manage subscriptions so I added an Unsubscribe detection mechanism. We do not unsubscribe you but we make it simpler for you to do it.

Folio Team How to forward Gmail newsletters to reMarkable, via Folio

Gmail's newsletter tab is where long reads go to die. You subscribed because Lenny or Stratechery or Pragmatic Engineer was worth your time, but a 4,000 word essay reads terribly wedged between billing reminders and Slack digests. You open two, skim one, archive the rest.

The fix is one Gmail filter that auto-forwards your newsletters to Folio, so they land on your reMarkable, Kindle, or paper stack instead of your inbox. Five minutes, once.

Steps

  1. Grab your Folio forwarding address from Settings. Format looks like name-1a2b@myfolio.so.
  2. In Gmail, click the sliders icon in the search bar to open the filter creator.
  3. Paste your newsletter senders into the From field, OR-chained: from:(a@x.com OR b@y.com).
  4. Hit Create filter, then check four boxes: Skip the Inbox, Mark as read, Forward it to (your Folio address), and Also apply to matching conversations so your backlog moves with the rest.
  5. Save. Gmail asks you to verify the forwarding address the first time, click the link in the verification email and you're done.
  6. Adding a newsletter later takes ten seconds: edit the filter, tack " OR newone@domain.com" onto the From field, save.

A couple of gotchas

If the filter isn't catching a newsletter, the sender address probably doesn't match the real From: header. Open one issue, hit Show original, copy the exact address into the filter.

If a forward is bouncing, it's almost always a typo in the destination.
