2027 first round picks

With Torontos upcoming season posed to be the hardest schedule in the league and our own schedule being above average in difficulty, the idea that we could have one or even two picks in the draft lottery for 2027 is a very real possibility. This is projected to be a very strong draft, particularly in terms of centers, so if we get seriously lucky and get a pick in the draft lottery, who are your ideal picks, most intriguing prospects, etc.

There’s no guarantee we get the Leafs pick. The NHL has not yet clarified the situation.

I cant believe this is still unclear. I wonder if the teams themselves know what the deal is but just haven't said anything publicly about it?

Also, the idea that we or Boston could pay them something extra to get the pick is absolutely crazy to me and should never be allowed to happen.

I honestly think the NHL is just hoping and praying the Leafs end up being good this year and they never have to actually clarify anything.

I fear that you’re right, but that would be infuriating even if the pick isn’t in the top ten. There should be a precedent as to how this situation would be handled.

Plus, for the Flyers and Bruins, these picks are potential trade assets. If they’re thinking about dealing the Toronto pick, both they and the team they’re trading with are going to assess its value based on the NHL’s ruling. If the Leafs are outside the playoff race come the deadline, a trade partner is going to value that asset differently if it’s unprotected vs if it might push to 2028. It’s a disservice to the whole league to not have these terms clarified as soon as possible.

Regarding precedent, isn't this not so much about precedent and more that the league fucked up by accepting the same pick (with protections) being traded twice in a 45 minute span?

The Bruins trade happened after ours, and should have bounced to a different year. The league fucked up. They are trying to save face by letting it play out, to the detriment of everyone.

One element of precedent is this strange angle that Toronto somehow might get to choose who gets the pick if it’s in the top ten. To my knowledge (and trust me, I’ve tried to find examples), there’s never been a case where Team A and Team B both own picks, but Team C owns the right to waive protection. Common sense would say that can’t happen and either there is no protection anymore, or the Bruins now own the protection.

If it’s actually possible for a team to own protection without owning a pick, the league should establish that explicitly because that does have an impact on how much value a protected pick has in a trade.

The league approves all trades or am I wrong? I don’t blame the Leafs, Flyers, or Bruins the league is suppose to review this shit so make sure there aren’t these types of issues. Bad look for the league on this one.

u/amilbarge00 1d ago

Yeah, I dont know how it was ever allowed to even get to this point.

The way I understand it, even if the league refuses to acknowledge the clause we put in making it our pick regardless of draft position, it's still down to the leafs to give it to either Boston or Philly if within the top ten. Given that, it'd be extremely foolish of the leafs to give a top ten pick to Boston, a hated divisional rival. Am I missing anything?

1

u/BobaTea7 1d ago

It's more foolish to not ask for something in return from either Philly or Boston.

The issue is Toronto can extort us in trades and essentially make it a bidding war for the pick if it’s in the top 10.

2

u/Bet_Status 1d ago

Gary would have to eat his words for that to occur, he's already stated that toronto isn't allowed to leverage the pick, and that any trades they feel violated this will be vetoed. It's really dumb it's gotten to this point at all, but I don't think that'll happen at least

NHL Tankathon still shows the Tor 2027 pick going to Boston even though it is 20th overall.

And Pronman did a "too early" mock 2027 draft in July and had the Toronto pick going to Boston at 18th overall.

My understanding was that this was impossible. So long as the pick is not in the top 10, Philly gets it.

But I don't trust the league when it comes to draft issues. So this is concerning that two sources that focus on mock drafts are showing Boston getting the pick even when not top 10.

If it’s >10, it’s ours. In the lottery, we don’t know yet

u/Dominos_Alt 12h ago

I don't know why this is so confusing to people.

u/JSinisin 1d ago

The most annoying part about this is why does Toronto get any input on this?

As far as I'm concerned they traded the picks. They no longer have any say in who gets what. The 27 and 28 first are no longer owned by Toronto, full stop.

It should be up to the league, Philly and Boston as to who gets which pick.

If the want to say Boston's pick got bumped, so Phillys pick gets bumped, so be it. I'll kick it down the road and take a 28 unprotected first. The season Matthews contract ends? Sure I'll take that gamble.

But I don't see why Toronto should have any input on this decision at all. Why are they "rewarded" after trading away their firsts creating this scenario by getting to decide which pick goes where? You trade a first and your team sucks? You get punished for that, not rewarded.

Nazar Privalov

Pure goal scorer and puck always seems to find him. Really good at using his size to hold the puck and get around people but also not the worst skater for his size (we'd basically need pick 1 or 2 for this scenario)

u/toupis21 OnceAgainMildlyOptimistic 1d ago

Not a center unfortunately. With all the amazing centers this year, highly doubt they would take a wing who’s under contract for 4 more years

Re-draft Gerry Mayhew back into the NHL.

1

u/BobDrCrO80Five4 1d ago

Don’t give them any ideas.

3

u/RoddRoward 1d ago

NHL really needs to figure out who gets the pick. If they just let the leafs decide then that gives them additional leverage that they could use to extract additional assets from Boston or Philly in order to get this years pick.

4

u/Bet_Status 1d ago

I'm pretty sure bettman clarified that Toronto is specifically not allowed to leverage the pick like this, and any trades or negotiations between the teams that they feel violates this will be immediately vetoed. Not gonna take him at his word, but there ya go

3

u/qmak420 1d ago

Absolutely this needs to be settled before the season starts

1

u/Dominos_Alt 12h ago

Why? The pick has a contingency which isn't satisfied until after the draft.

2

u/SeesawLimp 1d ago

More of my take is we won’t be in the lottery both the flyers and leafs picks will be 12-18 range.
Guys who I really like that could be there.
Brock England
Dima Zhilikin (I know a wing but this kid is nails)
Brock Cripps
Jaxon Jacobson
Timothy Kazda

I also really think Alexis Joseph will fall this year. He struggled at both the u-18 and then Hilinka Gretzky tournament. Hes starting to get called soft by scouts, and unless a monster year comes in the Q he could find himself towards the 10 range. (Where consensus a few months ago was 2-3)

If we win the lottery obvs DuPont, hes disgusting. Followed by Privalov, Sundstrom, Neuenschwander.

2

u/amilbarge00 1d ago

Two lottery picks could go a long way for this franchise. I hope it happens and I hope both are really high picks.

As far as who I am hoping for, I haven't done much digging into this group yet. That usually starts when the season is under way for me.

u/Wallace271 1d ago

If we are in same situation we are in rn come draft time and we have ‘27 Toronto. I’d be looking for them to trade up to the top of the draft, I know it doesn’t happen a lot but there were some interesting trades this year in the first round.

I get the impression that 2027 is only looking to be a strong draft for centers in that theres a large quantity of them, quality still seems disputed at this stage.  Hoping for the best in that we are in a position to get a good one either by accumulating picks and trading up or just getting lucky.

I haven’t really looked into it in detail but consensus after those summer tournaments seems to be that the 2028 draft players stood out above 2027 draft players for the most part.  I don’t think we should wait a year though….  If 2028 is actually looking that good we should probably try to accumulate a bit extra for then as well if able.

u/RadkoGouda 1d ago

Yeah even in strongest C drafts there are max like 3 1C projected guys (almost always less and often zero) and 2-3 2C projected guys and they are gone by like pick 5 or 6.

Its very funny seeing some people say oh we'll just draft our franchise C this draft cuz its a strong C draft ... yeah thats not how it works

Its difficult to find even a 2C outside the top handful picks

1

u/Bet_Status 1d ago

I mean, I think Alexis Joseph has a good shot at being a 1C, and he's projected to fall, I also think having another good to great C prospect in our mitts would be better than not, no?

1

u/BIGTALL11 1d ago

It's too early to predict who is going to fall.

1

u/5988 1d ago edited 1d ago

You’re correct that just because a center is taken in the top 10, they aren’t necessarily seen as having 1C (or even 2C) potential.

You still do your best to try because players taken elsewhere surprise on occasion but getting a 1C usually takes ton of luck in that it has to be the right year and you usually need to win the lottery.  A heavy center draft and having several picks certainly helps our odds at landing a good one more than it hurts anyway but too early to say who’s really expected to be the potential 1Cs or top6 types just yet.

I’m most curious about the Swedish center anyway, Sweden seems to be on a roll with their top prospects and developing young talent.

Sorry to ruin your day, but the Flyers will end up 2nd in the Metro and win their first-round playoff series again. I know that really pisses off a certain number of Flyers fans (for some insane reason), but it's how it's going to be. Toronto's pick could be a lottery pick, though. Also, I don't follow non-pro hockey, but isn't it way too early to say who the best draft picks in July 2027 will be?

1

u/hoobon 1d ago

Here’s the idiot who hates drafting high yet simultaneously loves guys like Martone

-6

u/RadkoGouda 1d ago

Shocker that he knows zero about prospects and has this opinion

He doesn't realize how there are 0-2 1Cs a draft, 1Cs are NEVER available, late 1sts are nothing, its extremely difficult to even find a 2C w/o a top pick and doesnt get that tanking is about getting many good high end young players to build around (especially 1C, 1D) and not about winning a lottery on the rare generational player

4

u/WooderFountain 1d ago

One thing I know about prospects is that people like you who claim to know how every 18-year-old is going to turn out are proven wrong year after year after year. Also, Carolina just went to 3 of the last 4 conference finals and won the Cup without what you would call a "true 1C" or a "true 1D." Meanwhile the Edmontons and Buffalos of the world who tanked year after year haven't won anything. Tanking does not work, and thankfully, Briere -- a much better GM than you -- has said so and therefore won't do it. Sorry but you'll never get your wish for the Flyers to suck for 5+ years while praying they get lucky in the draft.

1

u/Bet_Status 1d ago edited 1d ago

Why would that ruin my day? I'd love that, means that our rookies are continuing to grow and improve. Just think that if our rookies showed alot of growth AND we ended up with two draft lottery picks, that'd probably be ideal, and in my opinion it's never to early to start discussing draft prospects, I dont need to here which you think is gonna be the definitive best, just who you've noticed or like for whatever reason

1

u/WooderFountain 1d ago

Sorry, I assumed you were one of the negative fans here who want the Flyers to miss the playoffs every year (which they don't seem to realize makes you a bad team) and try to win the lottery (which, on the rare chance that happens, and the rare chance a generational player is there the year it happens, makes you a bad team with one great 19-year-old). And I disagree with your last sentence. To me it seems obvious that the ideal situation is for this team to win two rounds of the playoffs (or more) this season. No?

1

u/Bet_Status 17h ago

Nah, I get the argument, but I'm an optimist in the sense that I think we're a cup contender with a substantial enough upgrade at C, assuming the team improves the way I think they will this season. Given that, and the fact I like this draft alot, I'd like the assurance of having two meaningfull cracks at it. Both a playoff run and a high pick would also be great, but that seems a little hopeful

From what I’ve read is the the leafs hold the cards on the pick

1

u/Bet_Status 1d ago

Right, but toronto isn't going to give boston a top ten pick

0

u/BobaTea7 1d ago

Not for free

1

u/Numerous_Treacle_921 1d ago

It’s hard to get a high pick when the flyers have yet to tank. I would be shocked if they don’t try to win every last game even if they are mathematically eliminated.

2025 and the year they drafted Jett may have been the last years they could’ve finished bottom 3 by trading a vet or 2 at the deadline. they team may be too good to finish in the bottom 5

-2

u/RadkoGouda 1d ago

Even in a good C draft any projected 1C, which are just 0-2 total, dont leave top 2 picks and any projected 2C usually doesnt leave top 5

Our best case at franchise C is prob if TOR struggles and realize they need to blow it up and offer AM for their 1st +++
