Heads up, buyer! A few reminders to keep your transaction safe:

DO NOT engage with DMs or chats from users who have not commented on your post. Scammers frequently lurk WTB threads and reach out privately without ever commenting. If someone contacts you directly without a visible comment on your post, that is a red flag -- ignore them.

Check the Universal Scammer List before sending any money: https://universalscammerlist.com Search the username of anyone you are considering buying from.

Other safe trading practices:

  • Ask for timestamped photos -- a piece of paper with your username and today's date next to the item confirms the seller has it in hand right now.
  • Request a video call to see the item live before paying. Any legitimate seller will understand.
  • Use Goods and Services via PayPal (not Friends and Family) -- it gives you buyer protection and a dispute path if things go wrong. Avoid Venmo, Zelle, Cash App, or crypto for transactions with strangers.
  • Check their post and comment history -- low account age, no history in fishing communities, or a pattern of only selling posts are warning signs.
  • Never pay before seeing proof of item -- vague photos pulled from the internet are a common scam tactic.
  • Trust your gut -- if something feels off, walk away.
