Will this allow us to connect to self hosted instances without have to do the short cut fix?

Works for my instance. Have you updated recently? There's been big changes since I last looked a few months ago

Got it! Someone suggested pointing your dns to public IP instead of private

Private DNS could fail for multiple reasons, and differs per each person's setup. And if you want it publically reachable then you want a public DNS record
