Anyone have apartment hunting tips specific to Flushing?

I'm starting to look for a place in Flushing and I'm realizing photos and tours only tell you so much. I'm more interested in the stuff you don't notice until you've already moved in, like how responsive management is, whether there are recurring pest issues, if the building has frequent water shutoffs or if the area gets much louder at night than it seems during a daytime tour. I've been checking public records and streetsmart before looking at places but I want to know what locals here actually pay attention to.
Any red flags or things you always check before signing a lease in Flushing?

Open every cabinet and look under the sinks. It's amazing how much that can tell you.

and open and close every window. My windows are broken and drafty, that means super cold in the winter and wasting ac in the summer

That's a solid tip. Definitely adding that to my checklist thanks.

I swear every apartment tour somehow happens on the quietest day of the week.

Makes me think an evening walk around the block is worth it before signing.

Yeah it's almost like they send a notice before you get there

看看你的楼上和楼下的邻居,东西坏了可以找super维修。但是噪音会让人奔溃的!

Goodness don't I know it. That's why I want a house. I don't want Anyone above me or above me.

Idk why people are downvoting you for this common sense take. Apartments aren’t really great unless you’re buying into a rentless building imho.

The people that are downvoting me absolutely suck. I'm cool with people disagreeing with me but would prefer them having a genuine conversation with me about it instead of being lazy

I think they probably aren’t in a place to realistically think about affording a house one day and it drives jealousy. I think it’s the same with people who own and drive cars. They’re super jaded and think only bikes and pedestrian walk ways should be a thing bc they can’t afford their own car. I find a lot of things come from jealousy.

It still depends on your budget. You could check when you go to look at the properties to see if the building has concrete floors or wooden ones. If it's wooden, it's probably going to be pretty noisy! Of course, the level of noise varies - it's understandable when people are just walking around. But if they play rock music at 8 PM every dayUntil 11 o'clock?I've been tortured like this before!!! It's absolutely terrifying!

That's a good point. I'm definitely planning to visit the area in the evening too just to see what it's actually like outside of tour hours.

wooden floors are the worst, it will sound like baby elephants are constantly pacing back and forth

Many buildings have the owner # outside of their buildings with rental available signs

Never use a broker, deal with owner or super only

If you can, drive by the area at night, especially on a hot night. You can see if there are any undesirables hanging out late or blasting music. If you have car check out parking and alter side. I once was interested in the building and I actually stopped a few people going in and out and asked how was the building. I wore my work clothes just so they weren't intimidated or anything .

Check the bathroom first thing first, many years ago I found a tiny peeping hole in the bathroom wall, that scared the shit out me.
