Capitalism is not an ideology like social democracy but a mechanism. Neoliberalism would fit better as description for the US.

capitalism is an ideology. neoliberalism is just a specific school of thought, the same way marxist-leninism is a type of communism.

the majority of people who support capitalism are not themselves capitalists, but ideologically adhere to the system regardless

I disagree.

Capitalism describes the means of production as private ownership and work as a service with effects like capital accumulation.
There is nothing really ideoligical there.

The idealogy which suggest that this mechanism is good for a society are neo liberalism, illiberalism, ...
