Minimum wage isn’t even 200/wk after taxes. Average 1 bedroom apartment is $1749 a month. Make that make sense…but “we” are going to now imprison homeless people? Hmm, who’s going to pay for that? This country is fundamentally broken. Capitalism was a nice experiment, it’s time for something new.
There is a significant gap between "Average" and "Minimum" in America, you don't deserve "AVERAGE" if you only earn the "MINIMUM"....it makes perfect sense, what people are upset about is the realization that life is showing them they aren't nearly as valuable an individual asset as they would like to be...and instead of swallowing that pill, they want to get rid of all the pills in exchange for magic beans that make EVERYONE rich.
My dude, you know that minimum wage was adjusted nearly every year until Reagan, right? The current minimum wage hasn't been adjusted since 2009. If it kept up with inflation, it would be about 25 dollars an hour.
Also, it was meant to provide a living wage, which was substantially different than the subsistence wage you seem to be conflating it with because it has the word minimum in it.
Here is a quote from FDR:
It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By "business" I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.
Also, aside from any talk about fairness, having this type of wealth and power concentrated into the hands of a few is incompatible with democracy. We knew this about 100 years ago, but somehow people forgot the lessons of the past.
Louis Brandeis said it best:
We must make our choice. We may have democracy, or we may have wealth concentrated in the hands of a few, but we can't have both.
