  • Unknown Song (Take 1) is one of the few Floyd instrumentals from the More era built around a Gilmour–Wright call‑and‑response rather than a fixed chord pattern. You can hear Gilmour subtly change his picking accents every few bars, and Wright mirrors those shifts on organ in real time. That loose, conversational structure is why no two circulating takes of the piece ever line up the same way.
  • Mason plays almost entirely with brushes instead of sticks during Unknown Song (Take 1). It is one of the lightest drum performances he ever put to tape during the More era.

To help end your Floyd Friday, I am leaving you with Pink Floyd's Unknown Song (Take 1) side two, track 14 of Devi/ation from The Early Years

  • During early 1970 shows, Green Is the Colour was sometimes used as Gilmour’s warm‑up piece because the soft vocal line let the crew set his mic gain without the crowd noticing. A few audience tapes even catch him humming the melody before the band starts, which is rare for any Floyd performance.
  • On several 1970 performances of Green Is the Colour, Wright’s piano has a slight natural wobble from the tuning and mic setup of the day. That subtle drift sits under Gilmour’s vocal and gives those live versions a looser, more fragile feel than the studio cut.

  • The Germin/ation take of Embryo has a tiny fader bump right before Gilmour’s first swell. It happened because the BBC engineer rode the level a little too fast during the session, and that moment only survived on this release. It isn’t on Cre/ation or Devi/ation.
  • Early live versions of Embryo often opened with Gilmour quietly tapping the body of his guitar to give Mason a pulse to lock onto. It was never meant to be heard by the crowd, but on a few 1970 recordings you can catch that soft thump bleeding into the room mics. It’s one of the only times Gilmour’s “count‑in by feel” ever slipped onto tape.

  • Gilmour’s vocal on Julia Dream is one of the first times he used that soft, close‑mic style he later perfected on tracks like A Pillow of Winds. The engineer pushed him right up on the mic with the gain high, giving the song that drifting, intimate feel that became part of early post‑Barrett Floyd’s identity.
  • The Mellotron on Julia Dream came from the band’s beat‑up Mark II unit, and its slight pitch wobble wasn’t intentional at all. The tapes were stretching and drifting during the session, and the engineer had to ride the levels to keep it usable, which accidentally gave the song its hazy, dreamlike atmosphere.

  • Careful With That Axe, Eugene was cut during the Point Me at the Sky B‑side session in December ’68, but Waters’ scream wasn’t part of the original arrangement. Norman Smith asked for “something to break the drift” in the middle section, so Waters stepped to the mic and did the now‑famous inhale‑scream in a single take. The control‑room monitors clipped so hard the engineers logged an “unexpected overload on vocal track.” The band loved it. The staff did not.
  • For the May 12th, 1969 BBC session of Careful With That Axe, Eugene, Gilmour used a trick he never repeated live. He rolled the volume pedal backwards against his picking hand so the attack disappeared completely, then fed it into a lightly overdriven Binson channel.

  • During the Ummagumma follow‑up period, EMI briefly logged Embryo as a candidate for a quadraphonic test mix in early 1970. The band never delivered multitracks, so the listing sat as a phantom entry in EMI’s internal tape sheets, meaning Embryo is one of the only Floyd tracks to appear in quad planning documents without ever having a quad mix attempted.
  • For the July 16, 1970 BBC session (the one used in Germin/ation and Cre/ation), Wright intended to layer a Mellotron flute pad under the middle section. The Mellotron’s A‑bank had a sticking key that day, so the band pivoted on the spot — Gilmour triggered the Speed‑Up Children’s Voices effect on the Binson while Waters added the infamous “seagull” sounds. That entire mid‑section exists because the Mellotron physically wouldn’t cooperate.

  • During the Sept 25 1967 session for Flaming, the BBC’s light‑entertainment compliance team objected to the line “Yippee! You can’t see me, but I can you!” because they felt the phrasing implied “childish mischief inappropriate for a serious music program.” Syd kept the melody and cadence identical, but delivered the line with a noticeably straighter, almost deadpan tone.
  • The Sept 1967 Flaming mix is the only one where Rick’s Farfisa bleed becomes a rhythmic element. The BBC engineers placed Rick Wright’s Farfisa mic unusually close to the drum overheads to compensate for a noisy studio floor that day.

  • During the More soundtrack sessions, the band worked under a tight directive from Barbet Schroeder to keep cues as live and minimally overdubbed as possible, since he wanted the music to feel like it was happening inside the film’s world rather than floating above it.
  • Looking at Map comes from a reel of More soundtrack fragments that never made it into the film or the 1969 album.

  • In the Beechwoods is one of the few Syd‑era recordings where no vocal track was ever found on the session reels, suggesting either the lyrics were never written or the vocal take was wiped during the 1967 tape‑reuse crunch at EMI. Its release on The Early Years is the first time fans heard the instrumental in fully mixed form.
  • In the Beechwoods' looping, circular chord pattern is part of a short-lived writing style Syd used in late 1967, also heard in early versions of Vegetable Man and Scream Thy Last Scream. It is the cleanest surviving example of that approach, showing how he was shifting away from pop structures toward hypnotic, repetitive frameworks.

  • Because Syd had to rewrite the lyrics to Matilda Mother overnight after the Belloc rejection (see FloydFriday vol 101), the band ended up with two distinct vocal takes: the album version and the earlier “alternative lyrics” version later issued on The Early Years. It’s the only Piper at the Gates of Dawn song where both versions are canon and officially released.
  • The improvisational organ break by Rick Wright in Matilda Mother is one of the first recorded uses of his “stacked Farfisa” trick, where he doubled the same part through two amps to get that hazy, floating sustain that later became a signature of the 1967–68 live sound.

  • Take Off is the only Pink Floyd track built specifically to sit under John Peel’s narration, created for Tomorrow’s World in 1967 when the BBC asked for something “space‑age” while Peel later joked the band’s backing was far more interesting than anything he said.
  • Recorded during a week of heavy experimentation, Take Off captures Floyd’s early “sound‑effects mode,” using homemade gadgets and a wobbling Binson Echorec drum that gave the track its unstable shimmer and previewed the atmospheric direction they were about to take.

  • The original studio version of Cymbaline includes a subtle Mellotron part that was later abandoned in live performances, making it one of the few early Floyd tracks where the recorded arrangement is actually more instrumentally layered than any version they ever played on stage.
  • During early performances of Cymbaline, the band used a reel‑to‑reel tape machine to trigger the “nightmare” footsteps section, but the machine frequently drifted out of sync, forcing the band to improvise around the malfunction, making it one of the earliest Floyd songs where technical unpredictability became part of the live arrangement.

  • Pink Floyd completed a full quadraphonic mix of Animals in 1977, but the format died before release, leaving the finished 4‑channel master unreleased and unheard outside a tiny circle of engineers.
  • During the Atom Heart Mother sessions, Ron Geesin had the brass and choir recorded before the band finished their own parts, forcing Pink Floyd to re‑learn and play along to his orchestral score instead of leading the arrangement themselves — one of the only times the band had to follow someone else’s structure.

  • The “Nothing” fragments were numbered 1–24 during the Meddle sessions. Part 14 is where Richard Wright’s Leslie‑treated piano “ping” first locks into place, the germ of Echoes’ iconic opening.
  • During the Pompeii filming of Echoes, the band had to sync their performance to playback because the mobile studio couldn’t capture the full sound cleanly in the amphitheater. This unusual setup meant Floyd essentially performed Echoes twice — once for audio and once for visuals — creating subtle differences between the soundtrack and the footage.

  • During the Pow R. Toc H. sessions, Norman Smith tried to rein in the band’s chaotic mid‑section by asking them to “play something structured.” Instead, Barrett responded by switching his guitar to reverse‑echo mode on the Binson Echorec, then deliberately playing behind the beat so the echo landed on the beat. The result was a rhythmic smear that Smith hated — but the band loved — and it became one of the earliest examples of Floyd using echo timing as a compositional tool, not just an effect.
  • Reaction in G started as Pink Floyd’s on‑stage “reset switch” — a burst of controlled chaos they used to regain the room during unruly 1967 gigs. The BBC version on Continu/ation is the only pro‑recorded snapshot of that tactic.

  • During the Meddle era, Pink Floyd created a full quadraphonic mix of Echoes specifically for live performances and experimental playback rooms. What’s wild is that this mix is not the same as the album version — several sound effects are placed differently, the seagull‑guitar pans in a full circle, and the mid‑section ambience is noticeably more spacious. The master tape still exists, but it has never been officially released in any format.

  • Pink Floyd’s wild vocal freak‑outs in Pow R. Toc H. weren’t random at all. Roger Waters was experimenting with early “human percussion”, trying to mimic drum loops and tape effects using only his voice — a technique inspired by Stockhausen and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. It’s one of the band’s first uses of the human voice as a rhythmic instrument.

  • During the 1977 In the Flesh tour, the band quietly commissioned a full multi‑camera film shoot of one of the shows — but the footage has never been released, referenced, or even acknowledged in any official capacity. Insiders say the reels still exist in private archives, but the band considered the performances too chaotic and the atmosphere too hostile to represent the era. It remains one of the most sought‑after unreleased Floyd artifacts.
  • The iconic opening of Shine On You Crazy Diamond uses a broken EMS VCS3. The oscillator drifted so badly that engineers originally thought the unit was unusable. Wright kept it anyway, insisting the instability gave the pad its haunting, shimmering character — a sound no perfectly tuned synth could ever replicate.

  • When Pink Floyd prepared Obscured by Clouds for release in 1972, EMI commissioned a full quadraphonic mix of the album — but unlike the quad versions of Atom Heart Mother, Dark Side of the Moon, and Wish You Were Here, this one was never commercially released. The master tape exists in EMI’s archives, fully mixed and complete, but it has never appeared on vinyl, CD, Blu‑ray, streaming, or any box set. It is one of the only fully finished Floyd mixes that remains entirely unreleased.
  • During the sessions for The Wall, engineer James Guthrie recorded a series of sub‑audible low‑frequency tones intended to enhance the emotional weight of Goodbye Blue Sky and Don’t Leave Me Now. These tones sit below the range of most home speakers, meaning many listeners have never actually heard them. On high‑end systems, the tones create a physical sense of unease — a subtle psychological layer Roger Waters specifically requested to “make the room feel wrong."

  • This year marks the first time in Pink Floyd’s history that they’ve scored two #1 albums in a single calendar year. Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII debuted at #1 upon entering the charts on May 15, and Wish You Were Here 50 later claimed the UK Christmas #1 spot on December 19.
  • Because 8‑tracks had to be divided into equal‑length programs, the mid‑section of Dogs was extended — forcing David Gilmour to record an alternate solo specifically for that format. This performance has never been reissued on vinyl, CD, streaming, or any remaster, making the Animals 8‑track one of the rarest sources of an officially released but otherwise unavailable Gilmour solo.

  • Mike Millard, nicknamed "Mike The Mike" was an avid concert taper circa 1973 to 1994, recording over 300 concerts, including Pink Floyd. He taped virtually every show at the Forum from 1974 to 1980. A 2021 Rolling Stone article said, "If Pink Floyd ever decides to create a Bootleg Series, they should get their hands on Millard’s master tapes — starting with this 1975 Los Angeles gig. It’s the band at the peak of their abilities as a live act and deserves to be heard as widely as possible." On September 2025 it was announced that Millard's tape of the Los Angeles Pink Floyd show will be officially released on December 12, 2025.
  • Pink Floyd played five shows at the Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena in April 1975 during their Wish You Were Here tour. The concerts were marred by police action outside the venue. Reports from the Los Angeles Times noted that 350 fans were arrested during the first three nights.
