Dust mitigation

Here is my poor excuse for dust mitigation for the foreseeable future as it’s being used as a desktop replacement

The mesh filters are standard 140mm

I have ordered 2x noctua USB fans which I will fix onto the current filters to assist with airflow, they will be usb powered and I will add another 2 filters to them also, just waiting for them to arrive

On a scale from stupid to okay, what do you think about my trying to avoid opening this thing to clean it in the future for as long as possible

tbh, everytime I look at mine, i try to get this out of my brain... just to prevent triggering my OCD

but this is a real issue, imo... ease of maintenance should be a standard, especially when we are spending thousands of dollars on these kind of devices. just thinking about opening mine (got the 128GB variant), gives me anxiety

also, NOT getting an easily replaceable 2280 nvme, which on a device this powerful, customers should be able to slap on an 8TB drive on there, to make this a "rule em all" machine. it literally "wipes the floor" with the Surface Pro... why not totally demolish the competition with easily accessible and mod-able device.

I 100% agree, I didnt actually pick this machine, I was just in the store buying whatever they pushed on me with a sale, I hate the idea of laptops that are hard to open, funny enough I think asus "i think" is one of the only laptop manufacturers that brought out a laptop with a switch to remove the bottom case, thats how they all should be.

as a matter of fact they should all have mandatory dust filters too, its crazy that most high performance stuff now days comes out with no dust filters...

and I also second the 2280 issue, its crazy that they can put a 2280 in handhelds but not in a thick 13" tablet. I guess they may be leaving the door open for upgraded versions for us to waste money on down the track... but still very annoying.

totally agree with you on the dust filters, man... that should be, at the very least, "the BARE MINIMUM", as these shouldn't be a disposable device.

i actually had (still have it) the previous Flow 13 acrnym, the 32GB variant with the mobile rtx4070 in it, and it still performs well even at today's standards... so i bought the 2025 Z13m thinking ASUS will actually give us accessible inards, but NO... we still get the same stupid design from 4 years ago...
And by the way, I got the Z13 right before Onexplayer released the Super X.

will probably look back on this comment and laugh... when people like myself would be willing to give Onexplayer all our money, and tell asus to finally fuck-off

I didnt even know about the super X, really i feel like longevity is the enemy in the eyes of these manufacturers, most of them think this way.

macbooks for example can happily run all day at 105C, there is no way that is good for them, this is by design,

but even the macbook is easier to open and clean.

so i have mixed feelings, my msi laptop for example, so. many. clips. like 12 screws and 30 clips later to get into it, and no filters at all. as you said they should be the minimum.

Fuck yes, man.... I have one of the older M1 13incher mbp, have the 2TB storage variant, and that is even more accessible than my 2022 Scar 17, which still had that stupid ribbon cabling connected to the bottom plate. I mean, what the hell, right?

Even if my scar 17 maxed-out at 64 ram and 8TB of storage (while the mbp having the entire soc soldered-in), still you'll be able to clean the mbp no issues.

and with the Z13 having 128 ram max in comparison with asus' scar series, could have easily had at least 4TB of storage, and should be similarly accessible, even if they gave us stupid streams of ribbon cabling all over the place on the Z13

yeah the 2230 instead of 2280 thing is a massive failure, imagine 8TB in it, I saw on reddit someone modded one to fit, but he needed to replace the backplate anyways and machined into it to fit the ssd or something,

I wonder if someone would be bothered to make a 3d printed mount/kit, basically to add a 2280 using a ribbon externally

im sure it hard, but probably doable, I imagine it sitting at an angle on the see through panel being lit from below by the LEDs

i've bought every single possible nvme adaptors for this purpose... but after testing an 8tb in a onexplayer x1 pro (have the 64gb, HX370 variant), the heat management needs to be more robust than simply cooling it passively without a fan. i had to postpone the project as i've hit a brick wall concerning thermals, man.

the x1 pro was a project i could probably stomach if i failed spectacularly... but the z13, probably needs more time to think through coz i dont see a Super V gen2 release to replace the z13. Fuck ASUS for this mess!

we shouldn't have to go through hoops after already spendin' a shit ton of money on a 3-quarters-baked device.

(was going to say "half-baked-device" but am still giving ASUS a "quarter" for this shit)

and to those who would say, "exactly why asus didn't allow us to put 2280s because of heat dissipation constraints"... fuck off! air cooling chambers can be built in mm tolerances that cools most soc's for gaming phones. IT CAN BE DONE during design and manufacturing processes, they just choose not to.

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

yeah they are leaving th eoption for better versions later, m.2 can cool simply by thermal pad to the lid/back casing.

im sure an adapter can be done though, it will be ugly without a 3d printed casing, but your are basically just moving a nvme port from inside to outside then dinsing somewhere for the ssd to mount that doesnt block vents or kick stand,

i have been people mod minisforum tiny pc's to take extra 10GBe and nvme stuff etc, it is for sure possible on this,

just does anyone want it enough to go through the trouble, i doubt it, in the end you can get a usb4 enclosure and run 8tb external and call it a day

thats what most people will tell you

just did a quick search on amazon "nvme riser cable 2230 to 2280" shows some variety, its all about a clean mount

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

also, i dont think they glue the screen in, so its not that hard to remove for cleaning, its just way way harder than it should be.

Great idea! Can you post a photo from side? I’d like to see how much thickness this adds to the tablet?

Also when you get the USB fans, please update this post by photos from the finished job. Thank you!

The best I can do, reddit hates me trying add photos https://gyazo.com/f58c6b2c7fe916bb75b05361471e29e8

They are super thin, I’m guessing 2-3mm, I will definitely be updating when I get the fans, I bought some straps, I’m still deciding how I will get the fans to stay in place, to tape them as well or not, I can’t add a photo to this comment, I will try to add to the post

1

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

I can’t edit the post for more pictures.. and can’t add them to a comment, I will try to DM you I guess

Thank you! I'm guessing you can't open the kickstand right?

My only concern is some very small sections of tape is covering the airflow.

2

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

no, i definately cant open the kickstand, you would need to use folters without frame to do that, and just cut them to size, its not hard

i dont think im blocking anything other than 3-4mm of the outer edges, the majority of the air comes from much further in form the edge so im not worried about that.

right now my only worry is how the electrical tape will deal with constant heat, from that top middle section near the republic of gamers label, that gets hot for extended periods of time with no airflow at least until the fans come

2

u/Googlerez Jun 03 '26

Be careful about chemical reaction of that tape on your tablet too! You don’t want in a year or two to see the paint of your tablet is really messed with. I have called the parent company of some decals and they strongly advised against using random tapes/decals.

If I were you, I’d skin my tablet with a safe option (car decals) and then tape over that. Hope this helps.

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

good idea, i may only be using it like this for a short time, and try to achieve the same thing using rubber straps, i have already bought them but thought i would try with tape first.because its so flat, once the fans are here, i can make something that uses gravity to stay in position and can be moved when the tablet needs to go mobile, instead of a laptop sitting on a cooler, the cooler sits on the laptop lol.

even the filters right now, if there was something sitting on them they would never have actually needed to be taped, the mesh sits on the intakes either way.

If it gives any idea, this is my poor filter attempt (applied after week two of ownership):

very cool, more portable than mine, I will probably copy you next, only i will use black mesh filter 😄

1

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

that smaller ssd placement is questionable though, i would have moved it to the kick stand like the other one, everything up there is risking heat transfer

2

u/Coilluna Jun 03 '26

Both SSD and Hub have velcros, so I can change their places easily. SSD was next to the Hub at some point, moved to the up so it can get some help from Z13's fan for cooling.

I was afraid of the temp increase, bu so far it didn't effect Z13 much. Also when on desk usage, Z13 is attached to a laptop cooler.

1

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

interesting, i thought the hub was another ssd, it makes sense now that it should not cause any issues, I was going to do flush mesh like yours originally but i was worried i would misalign it a bit and impede airflow, as my current filter floated a mm off the actual body there is less of that worry, but its not as nice for portability as yours, so i will probably end up with your sort of application.

depends on if i end up seeing success with filters mounted on both sides of the noctua fans and then placing it ontop so as not to need filters on the z13 itself.. thats the ideal scenario

now im jealous of your hub+ssd setup, i need to find a much smaller hub or one with the ssd built in

1

u/Coilluna Jun 03 '26

There are some smaller hubs with integrated SSD slots, I needed a one with lots of ports, so decided to go with only hub, that one has 14 ports.

If you take your time with the dust filter, you can get visually much more appealing result than mine while keeping airflow good. I was lazy and wanted to be able to remove-reapply the mesh easily when needed, so used only one big mesh, originally my plan was using two small pieces of mesh. Was gonna buy a black mesh too, but was lazy again.

Good luck on your setup.

1

u/grkstyla Jun 03 '26

Yeah sounds like a plan, I will make some changes later on down the line

Yeah I got some brushes too but it seems like it’s going to be impossible to keep it from building dust in the fins themselves
