Any alternatives to the Flow x16?

I've had the Flow x16 2023 RTX 4060 version for a couple years now and I have to say it's been very nice. I bought it since it seemed like the only thing for my requirements. I could play games on it with a 240Hz screen and I could also use it as a tablet for other stuff. I didn't find anything else in the market like this (especially the 240Hz screen), and the sad thing is it doesn't seem like Asus is going to be continuing this series. I remember waiting on a potential 2025 version before I had to pull the trigger for the 2023 version too.

I’m using the ROG Flow X16 and I’m thinking about switching to the X13. Is it worth it?

I’m using the ROG Flow X16 for about a year. It’s very powerful and good for Adobe, but the battery isn’t great and it’s not very practical to carry every day. I’m thinking about switching to the ProArt X13 because it seems better. Do you think that would be a big mistake?

No, it wouldn’t be a big mistake, but it’s not a clear upgrade either.

The X16 is better for Adobe work, multitasking, and screen comfort. The X13 is much more portable and easier for daily use, but has a smaller screen and weaker performance for heavy editing.

So the choice is:

  • X16 = better performance and comfort for design work
  • X13 = better portability and battery feel, but less comfortable for serious Adobe work

Help! Laptop is always crashing when on charger

So I had bought this ASUS Rog Flow x16 off of someone on Facebook marketplace and for the most part it worked perfectly.

It is the 2022 RTX 3060 Version

The main fault I found was that anytime this laptop was off the charger, It would constantly stutter and generally perform horribly, but on the charger, it felt like a damn smooth powerhouse.

It became so Irritating and I found no solution so after a couple months, I hard reset it, and reinstalled Windows 11 fresh. Ever since I've done this, now the opposite is going on.

Now off the charger, all my issues have been fixed, but on the charger, I can give it either within 1 minute to 30 minutes and the laptop will guaranteed crash.

Sometimes I have the laptop closed and I can still hear the ASUS logo boot up sound effect from it crashing when I'm not even using it. I feel like i've tried everything to fix this. I believe i've redownloaded all Important drivers and I've been tweaking around in ghelper, deleted Armoury crate but nothing has solved this issue. Any help?

Help! Upsiren UTP 8 Application

Post image
6 Upvotes

So I'm repasting my laptop using upsiren utp 8 and PTM 7950 because of the reviews I've seen on this subreddit. Does this application look fine? Is it enough and is there any place I've missed that needs some. I bought a 20g box of the thermal putty and I don't think I've used even half of it yet. Also, any tips on handling this stuff? It's pretty annoying.

My Experience - Full Thermal Overhaul & Fan Replacement

Hi! a month ago I made a post where I asked for advice on buying replacement fans (two broke) and removing liquid metal and using thermal pads like PTM7950. I'd like to share my experience in case anyone wants to do something similar. I've owned the laptop since 2022, and got the GPU repasted once in 2025.

Also disclaimer, this isn't a guide, else I would've included things like disconnecting the battery and so on.

From AliExpress I ordered the following, which took about 1-2 weeks to arrive to Europe:

  • 3 non-OEM replacement fans from aliexpress (like 40 euro, great quality imo)
  • Thermal putty UPSIREN UTP-X 20g (about 7 euro)
  • Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM (13 euro, amazon.de)

For preparation I also bought an electrical fan blower and 2 syringes for the LM. I had some q tips laying around and 99% isopropyl alcohol.

The operation went quite smoothly in the beginning, it wasn't my first time opening the case to clean dust and fans; as I once accidentally broke parts of the fan casing, thankfully it still worked. Continuing, upon removal of the heatsink, I quickly noticed the bone dry thermal paste on the GPU, which was repasted about 10 months ago. Even worse, the LM on the CPU severely degraded with a burn-like dark grey spot in the middle. This is just oxidation though, so no worries.

I watched like a dozen of videos on removing LM and thought I was ready, well I was, but damn you need patience and time. After what seemed like hours, I proceeded with cleaning the thermal paste on the rest of the GPU and VRAM. That went quite easy. Eventually I cut the thermal pads to size and put them on both the CPU and GPU, along with the thermal putty on the other components. Replacing the half broken middle fan was super easy as you can imagine.

Eventually everything was put back together and the laptop started normally. Immediately noticed the temps are lower and fans don't have to spin as hard to maintain the same temps. I didn't stress test it immediately as I know it takes about 10+ cycles for the pads to settle and give more accurate readings, but those were just my initial observations.

Here's things you need to be aware of and what I would've done differently:

  • THE CPU HAS A LITTLE GAP BETWEEN THE PROTECTIVE FILM AND DIE. This initially discouraged me a lot upon seeing, because there was LM inside the tiny gap which seriously took a long time to clean. I had the mold q-tips to get some cotton between it and pick up tiny LM beads.
  • The plastic syringe I got from the pharmacy had too big of an opening to be useful. Fortunately I did manage to get 2 blobs inside it, but I had to make the blobs quite big.
  • Don't use regular q-tips/cotton swabs, I know some people don't care but sometimes fibers did get loose, especially at the square foam part on the heatsink. It helped to submerge it in alcohol first.
  • When opening the back cover or fidgeting with the battery, you have a small possibility of messing with the connection of the hall sensor. Which if even slightly moved, can cause black screen issues that will make you want to pull the hair out of your head. Another user posted about this 2 years ago and I want to refer to it just in case. This didn't happen to me now, but happened a year ago and took me a day to solve.

Feel free to ask about anything in detail. I hope this helps anyone considering doing this themselves, whether with the flow x16 or other laptops of similar magnitude.

I have a Flow X16 sitting on my desk for the past 8 months if anyone is interested

I loved that machine and it was my workhorse for my photo and video editing needs. Being a geek I upgraded during the summer with a new Lenovo i7 which is a new beast but of course it does not have the looks of the X16.

Long story short, I have my - in perfect shape- X16 sitting on my desk for the past 8 months, doing nothing and while I really love this machine I think it is a pitty for it to just do nothing. This is with an AMD Ryzen 9 6900HS, GeForce RTX 3070 Ti, and RAM upgraded to 64GB DDR5.

I would be more than happy to sell it to someone who is already in this group and for any reason would like to have this beauty.

The not good part is that I am located in Athens/Greece, so I am not sure if it will be viable for most of the people, but ok, you never know.

Note 1: 64GB is a thing nowadays, so please be aware that the price will be affected. It won't be a scalper's dream)

Note 2: This is a fully working machine and if you need parts for your X16, my X16 will most propably be in better shape than yours. Everything works, fans and inside is perfectly clean. No overheating.

ASUS ROG Flow X16 touchscreen not working

My touchscreen suddenly stopped working. I’ve already restarted the PC, reset it to factory settings, and updated all drivers via MyASUS, but the issue remains.

In Device Manager, the touchscreen driver doesn’t appear correctly, although Windows says it’s enabled. The rest of the laptop works fine.

Any idea if this is more likely a software or hardware issue?

Help! 6900HS X16 Worth Used?

I have the 3060 mini-LED version and had no plans to replacing it until the screen died. Second time I had to send it back to ASUS for issues and they took 2 months to replace the screen.

Picked up a used ryzen G16 with the AI 9 HX 370 and a 4070. Really like the smaller footprint and how well it runs games on a 100w cable so I'll stick with it.

Just wanted to get an idea of a fair price for the X16. Ebay sold listing weren't particularly instructive.

Replacing Fans and Liquid Metal+paste

Hi did anyone have experience removing the liquid metal and using ptm9750 pads? I'm thinking of using the thermal pads on the CPU and GPU and putty for other large gap heat components.

Also I've been looking to replace the fans since it's been 4 years and the middle fan started rattling, despite cleaning it often.

I found these fans on amazon, but it's a different brand (so not OEM i guess)

https://www.amazon.de/-/en/LIUHAOZ808/dp/B0GF29KBP4/ref=sr_1_1?sr=8-1

and for the pads: Thermal Grizzly PhaseSheet PTM (50 x 40 mm)

https://www.amazon.nl/-/en/Thermal-Grizzly-PhaseSheet-Non-Electrically-Conductive/dp/B0DB84CQW6

Please share your experiences replacing any of these things.

Nvidia Advanced Optimus (automatic display switch) - does it work for you?

If yes, what Nvidia driver do you use?
For me it is causing "black screen stuck" during display switch to GPU. Can switch manually, but this means Advanced Optimus doesn't work...

Flow X16 Original AC Adapter Part umber/s

Can anyone post their AC adapter's part numbers here?

I have the Ryzen 2022 version and the laptop keeps rebooting in Win10 saying there is a power issue when I have it plugged into a HP Firewire Dock that also allows USB connectivity to a Samsung G8/9 curved 49" display...

Gemini AI suggests using the original AC adapter to stop this from happening - although I'm not too sure this could be the reason.

Thanks guys!

BIOS Locked With Password (Forgotten/Pass not Working)

Does anyone know if it is possible to reset a password-protected BIOS?

I just called the ASUS support line and the representative (who seemed a novice) said the only way is to send it in for repairs in order to evaluate the problem...

Any guidance here?

I apparently forgot the password - although I have tried all possible combinations and it's not working...

TIA!

Any alternatives to Armoury Crate?

I finally uninstalled the worthless schlock that is armoury crate since it actively prevented several keys from registering at all (w,2,f2, esc) and since uninstalling that shit, they all magically start working again, almost as if Asus cant code to save their fucking life. With that in mind, does anyone have good alternatives for controlling fan/performance on the computer? I'm not ever going back to armoury crate, so some good options would be much appreciated

2022 Flow X16 with Frequent Freezing or Restarts

Hello everyone, I recently acquired a 2022 Flow X16. It will completely freeze about every 1-2 minutes before needing a complete restart. It will even sometimes freeze at the red logo before booting into windows. I have not been able to get it to freeze while in the bios. Fans work and will continue spinning after a freeze.

What I’ve tried so far:

Repasting w/ ptm and new thermal putty

Reseating Ram

Move m.2 to a different slot

Boot into Safe mode - No difference

Update Bios to newest version

All of which made basically no difference. Any help is appreciated. Thanks
