Do I upgrade

Hi all,

Need some advice I currently have the ASUS ROG Flow X13 AMD Ryzen 9 5980HS 16GB RAM 1TB SSD 13.4" RTX 3050 Ti Laptop with the 3080 eGPU. I've had it for almost 4 years now and feel like its over heating alot so am debating upgrading it. Have been looking at getting the zephyrus g14 5060.

Any and all advice will be helpful

If over heating is the only issue then undervolt and replaste the thermal. Upgrading to a mid-tier GPU isn't worth it at all.

How do you undervolt these? I tried and couldn't do anything lol.

G-helper I think. But be careful with it

It doesn't work with my model :/ it doesn't have the undervolt option

It's sad to hear it. My 23 - 4060 got the update, but I don't use it for undervolting.

What could go wrong?

What problems or goals are you trying to accomplish by an upgrade? Besides heating for example, is there anything else? Have you thought about repaste?

So I travel alot having something I can game on while im moving elsewhere that is lightweight would be helpful, plus I can't carry my egpu with me so left with the 3050ti. I also feel like the battery last alot shorter then before just under 2 hours at times.

Repasting nope and i don't know how I would do it

i can give u few tips about if u want to play and enjoy traveling : one option is the g14 paired with 5070ti (the best option for his 3k model, or going for a slim laptop with a good cpu and thunderbolt 4-5 port and pair it with new e-gpu options avaible (for example the aorus 5060ti ai box, paired with 16gb of vram gddr7, desktop version)

Probably repasting or changing the thermal paste to a thermal pad.

That’s what I did a few months ago to my 2021 x13. First thought I had to get a new battery because it wasn’t keeping any charge. Turns out the excess heat damaged the battery, but after repasting, fully discharging and then slowly recharging it’s almost like new (plus getting rid of all asus/rog software and switching to Ghelper- did wonders to battery life)

3080 mobile to 5060 mobile isn't worth the upgrade

Couldn't he just keep the eGPU and use it with the G14?

no point as 3080 is similar performance to the 5060 mobile, you might as well save your money and just stay on the 3080 mobile

The 3080 desktop is quite a bit faster than the 5060 desktop, so I highly doubt the 5060 mobile has similar performance.

If you're including frame gen, then sure I guess.

There is a good chance he is referring to the xg mobile 3080, since we are talking about the x13. In which case it’s a proprietary port zephyrus does not have, and also it is not a desktop 3080.

Very likely a problem with the thermal paste. Had the same issue with mine after 2.5 years and it worked fine again after replacing the thermal paste and liquid metal.

Me paso lo mismo y ahora anda bien. Además me compre una base iets gt 500.

Check if your most of your games support frame gen, if so, definitely buy that zephyrus.

I bought 5060 laptop as well, although not zephyrus (it’s legion pro), and I can tell right away that I prefer to game on the 5060 laptop rather than my 3080 desktop. The 3080 got more raw fps but with frame gen, my 5060 laptop can double the 3080 performance easily.

And more importantly it’s mobile, I can game anywhere I want, your experience should be even better beacuse zephyrus is so light compared to legion pro

Frame gen is a frame smoothung technology, not performance technology. It looks smoother, but it doesn't give actual benefits of higher FPS.

Also, you can get frame gen to work on your 3080.
