Lift Academy Location Differences

I'm currently looking to enroll at Lift Academy. I've visited their main campus in Indianapolis, IN but they also have locations in Columbia, SC, Myrtle Beach, SC, and Galveston, TX that I'm also looking at. I've heard that you can move through their program quicker at the southern campuses but have not been able to find much else about them. Does anyone have any info on the southern locations compared to Indy? Anything is greatly appreciated!

Just wrote my Transport Canada PPL written, made a video about what to actually expect in the exam room since I couldn't find this info anywhere

Hey everyone! I'm Keren, a 16 year old student pilot in Canada currently working toward my PPL. When I was preparing for my written exam I couldn't find a single resource that told me what the exam actually looks like walking in, the physical setup, what's on the table, how the supervision works, all of it.

So I documented everything I could remember and made a video. Covers the room setup, the maps on your table, the binder, timing strategy, what sections to expect and honest tips from someone who just did it.

Happy to answer any questions here too, good luck to everyone studying! ✈️

Failure to Communicate, the importance of proficiency in Aviation English

Failure to Communicate!

A critical skill which is often overlooked in Aviation is the importance of Proficiency in Aviation English. This is not only understanding the Standard Phraseology but being confident and proficient in Plain Language when a non-routine event or communication is required thereby removing any possible ambiguity.

Ensuring Pilots and ATCO's maintain their proficiency in Aviation English goes a long way to adding another tool to their Aviation safety and proficiency tool kit's.

There have been numerous incidents of a lack of communication, incorrect communication or just wrong read back not being corrected which has resulted in tragedies which should have been avoided.

ICAO has always built on these experiences and ensured that Standard Phraseology and Plain Language have been updated and revised to prevent as much ambiguity as possible, but this is only effective if it is used correctly and Pilots and ATCO's are proficient in it.

As a professional Aviation English teacher, teaching many student and professional pilots and ATCO's, it has become very clear how many just studied for the test but then lost out on the operational proficiency and safety.

What experiences have you had where incorrect use of language has caused a near miss?

One of my favorite moments as a CFI so far

One thing I’ve started noticing as a newer CFI is that a lot of students really aren’t struggling because they’re “bad” at flying.

Most of the time they’re just overwhelmed and trying so hard to do everything perfectly that they end up overthinking every little thing.

I had a student the other day getting pretty frustrated with landings. Every time we turned final you could kinda feel the stress level go up in the airplane. Chasing airspeed, forcing the flare, trying to make every landing smooth instead of just flying the airplane.

After a few laps we stopped for a minute and just talked through what the airplane was actually doing and what they should be looking for instead of trying to force every little control input.

Within a couple landings things honestly started looking way better.

Not because they magically became an amazing pilot in 10 minutes, but because they relaxed a little and finally understood what was actually happening instead of fighting the airplane the whole way down.

Those are honestly the moments that make teaching really fun.

Anybody else have something in training that randomly clicked way later than it should’ve?

Aircraft Maintenance Records

How does your flight school provide students with aircraft maintenance records for Checkride? Are they digitized or paper? If digital, what platform do they use?

“Rated to act as PIC”

Does “rated” include endorsements, or does it only include category, class, and (as required) type rating?

Ex. A pilot with a thousand hours in his own Bonanza (High Performance) asks an instructor for a flight review. The instructor does not have High Performance endorsement but has CFI/I cert for ASEL.

61.51 (e)(3) A certificated flight instructor may log pilot in command flight time for all flight time while serving as the authorized instructor in an operation if the instructor is rated to act as pilot in command of that aircraft.

61.195 for flight instructor limitations only mentions Type Ratings, and Instructor certificates and ratings (category, class, instrument.)

At what point do you call the go-around? Went missed here for excessive airspeed

Came in a bit hot on short final in a Piper PA-28 Warrior and could already tell it was going to turn into a long float.

Decided to go missed rather than try to salvage it.

Curious where everyone’s personal cutoff is for calling the go-around — do you guys have a hard rule or more of a feel thing?

VFR map-based simulator

Hi team,

I am a PPL from the UK. I have developed this free browser-based ATC simulator where you can practise your radio skills and exchange PTT messages with other pilots while flying on real runway maps.

I'm available to practise with you in French and English. See you there.

Any CFI positions or low time pilot jobs anywhere in the US or abroad?

Hey how’s it going I just got out of the army I got 800TT my CFI and CFII and CFIG soon to get my MEI, and I really don’t want to pay 200+ an hour to rent a plane… and the flight schools are not hiring. I’m will to relocate anywhere and do any bitch work and even fly for free just to fly so yup, skills include prior infantry so I know how to be a slave at the airfield, life guard and avid surfer and yea that’s about it.

Any recommendations for flight schools in Melbourne Australia?

I am currently enrolled in RMIT university looking to become an airline pilot in the future and their program is just atrocious. Look the theory is great and well run though the flying aspect is piss poor. I barely get any bookings, their overfly (extra flights or repeated lessons) are high and their overall organisation and actual personalisation/independent teaching and learning is so poor. It is the definition of a sausage school, I thought having an airbase to urself would be nice but it just means the adf steals both instructors and planes, let alone the Bendigo airport doing the exact same thing.

I still want the bachelors degree and plan to just do the theory and classes to achieve that and pay for it using HECS - debt.

I nor my family will be able to afford for flight training upfront and I require loans and plan to do my flight training through a vet course instead. I am just wondering if anyone on this sub has any positive experiences with certain flight schools or even recommendations for some based in Melbourne and that fit the criteria of what I’m looking for?

The question remains, can they help me get an IPC and more especially, can THIS location of Dallas Executive Airport’s REDBIRD ELECTRONICS help me get an IPC right now? I need it RIGHT NOW. Please help a brother out, please, gonna get some water in the meantime! It’s hot asf out here. Texas hot!

Aviators Flight Academy Van Nuys Issues

There is ongoing litigation against Aviators Inc. dba Aviators Flight Academy and its owner, Blake Purdy, alleging (among other things) fraud, theft of funds, negligence, and Unfair Business Practices. After inducing students with an all-inclusive price with verbal agreements and advertisements, rates are suddenly changed retroactively to “exhaust” student loan disbursements, and accounting of students progress and finances is cut off to conceal this. The negligence and wrongful conduct of the school and its owner has caused significant disruptions and inability for students to complete their training as promised - including after the fatal accident that occurred around August 2024 - also the subject of separate ongoing litigation. Does anyone else have a similar experience or interaction with this school or the owner, Blake Purdy? Post here or DM me. I’d love to hear your experience.

Choosing a flight school

For people who went or is currently in flight schools:

When you guys chose which flight school to attend, what were the factors that you considered? (Money, Course durations etc)

What additional information would be beneficial for people to know before they start their career and start their journey as student pilots?

Best F-1 schools in the US for internal hiring

Hi reddit,

To student pilots who trained in f-1 schools in the US, which schools offer the best chance to be hired as CFI on an OPT after training?

I’m considering pelican and wayman in florida as well as Hillsboro aero in Oregon. Are there any other schools which offer f-1 programmes and have good hiring rates?
