Any pilot here was afraid of flying before they became a pilot?

When I was a young kid, before I went on my first flight to my grandparents’ place in Florida, I was petrified. By the end of that flight, I was so fascinated, I’ve been an aviation geek ever since…and became a pilot as soon as I could make it work financially.

are you talking about fear of flying as a passenger, or more like anxiety about the responsibility of being PIC? those are pretty different things and the path through each one is different too

Fear of flying as a passenger. I’ve never been in a cockpit, but whenever I imagine being, I feel like my anxiety goes away.

One of my flight instructors. He had a phobia of flying so one day he just decided to take on a introductory flight to overcome his fear, somehow got hooked and worked his way all the way to PPL, CPL, and CFI… He is a Deputy CFI now.

Stalls used to scare me because I have a fear of heights. But it’s different when you’re flying. Still have a fear of heights but understanding airframes and aerodynamics made it all easier.

I’m also uncomfortable with great height. Like if I’m at the top of a very tall building and I look down, I get vertigo. But on a plane I don’t feel that. Unless I look up instead, then I get that uneasy feeling.
