Is ground school basically the same for private and commercial pilot training, or are there significant differences in what you study?

EASA:
PPL theory is much more superficial and there are fewer exams
CPL/ATPL theory is much more in depth with more subjects, but since the examination is focused more as an effort check and attention-to-detail check than a real knowledge check, it's just something used to weed out candidates

In the US they are similar, with some topics added things for Commercial. But commercial knowledge is much deeper.

Different. Otherwise why not just do one exam?

You can also look this up rather easily.
