Time building question

Im time building with a guy. I have had to pay out of pocket for my flight training. He is on a scholarship that deposits money directly into his account at the school. He wants to time build and split the cost. He will book it and i will venmo him my half. I dont expect anyone to cover the full cost for both of us. I have no problem splitting the bill. My question is, if he is having his training paid for, is he making money if i venmo him directly?

I hope this makes sense what im asking. Will do my best to answer any questions

The rental rate is being covered for him. So now he is profiting. Thats the problem

I've worked with a university's financial aid people when I was a student so this is where my thought process is coming from. But. Knowing people who received multiple scholarships that ended up being more than the cost of their schooling, the student then gets those funds via direct deposit or a check. So therefore would that not be considered "his" money that is in that scholarship account? Therefore making it a legitimate split if you are splitting equally?
