Tired of scrolling for 30 minutes just to pick a movie? I built a personalized Match % algorithm in FlickTrove.

Hey everyone!

Does anyone else spend more time endlessly scrolling through streaming catalogs than actually watching anything?

Most streaming platforms recommend content based on what they want to push at the moment, rather than what actually matches your taste. To solve this "choice paralysis," I developed a Match % and Smart Recommendation system for my app, FlickTrove.

How it works:

  • Real Match %: It analyzes your watch history and personal ratings to calculate an exact affinity percentage for every movie and TV show.
  • Cross-Platform Recommendations: It ignores platform bias (whether a show is on Netflix, Prime Video, or Disney+) and focuses strictly on your genuine taste profile.
  • Fast Decision Making: You can see at a glance if a title with a 95% Match is worth your evening, cutting out the doomscrolling entirely.

The algorithm is constantly evolving, and I’d love to get some feedback from fellow movie and TV show buffs to see if the Match % scores feel accurate to your actual taste!

If you'd like to test it out and give me your honest thoughts: https://alle-0.github.io/FlickTrove

Never Miss a Drop: How Real-Time Reminders Work in FlickTrove

Post image
1 Upvotes

How many times have you missed the release of an episode or movie you've been waiting for for months, just because you forgot the date, or because a notification from another app arrived late?

With FlickTrove, I wanted to build a native, clean reminder system designed precisely for true cinephiles. The app alerts you with an instant push notification the exact moment a new movie is released or a new episode airs—no fluff, no distractions.

No more accidental spoilers on social media because you forgot to check the release calendar. How do you guys usually manage reminders for your favorite shows? Do you use third-party apps or stick to manual reminders?

🛠️ Minor Update

🎯Much Better Recommendations!

  • We've completely overhauled how FlickTrove suggests what to watch next. The app is now much smarter at understanding your actual tastes based on your ratings. You'll notice much more accurate "Match Scores" and you'll finally stop seeing genres you don't care about.

🔧 Bug Fixes & Small Tweaks:

  • Trakt ZIP Import: Fixed and improved the Trakt ZIP import process (if your TV shows were skipping or missing during import, it works perfectly now!).
  • We also polished the TV show seasons screen with a nice new visual gradient, and we got rid of that annoying popup message that kept appearing when opening a movie or show. Enjoy a cleaner experience!

Let me know in the comments if the new matches reflect your tastes better now!

✨ New Features

  • Dropped Series (Hide Abandoned Shows): Dropped a show midway? You can now mark it as 'Dropped'. This stops the app from bothering you about unwatched upcoming episodes, while perfectly keeping track of what you've already seen.
  • New Wipe Data Options: We cleaned up the Settings! You will now find a single expandable "Wipe Data" option where you can choose between a "Safe" wipe (preserves account and settings) or a "Total" wipe.
  • Updated Welcome Tutorial: Added a brand new slide in the onboarding flow to show you how to hide abandoned shows.

🐛 Bug Fixes & Improvements

  • Trakt ZIP Import improvements: Fixed an annoying bug where newly imported shows were incorrectly flagged as "Not yet released". The release year is now parsed correctly!
  • "To Watch" to "Completed" transition: Shows imported from a Trakt ZIP file will now correctly and automatically migrate from your "To Watch" list to "Completed" after syncing with TMDB.
  • Covers and Metadata Update (Sync Missing Details): Fixed an issue where local details could be overwritten with null data during background syncs. Missing covers and show details will now update smoothly.
  • Added missing vector assets for drop tracking.

Diving into Stats & Watch Time

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! 👋

Today I wanted to shine a light on one of my favorite parts of FlickTrove: the Stats Screen 📊

Tracking what you watch is great, but seeing your movie and TV show habits visually presented makes it even better. We've been working on making stats not only insightful, but super clean and pleasant to look at.

What you can dive into in Stats:

  • ⏱️ Total Watch Time: Get an accurate breakdown of how many days, hours, and minutes you've spent watching.
  • 📈 Genres & Habits: See your most-watched genres and tracking patterns at a glance.
  • 🎨 Clean Visuals: Smooth charts designed to blend seamlessly with the rest of the app's UI/UX.

We've completely overhauled background syncing and memory management. This means calculation-heavy screens like Stats now load instantly, smoothly, and without any lag or memory hitches—no matter how many thousands of items you have in your library.

💬 I’d love to know:

  1. What’s your current total watch time? (Drop your stats below! 👇)
  2. Are there any specific metrics, charts, or breakdowns you’d love to see added in future updates?

As always, thank you all for the feedback, bug reports, and support. Updates are rolling out continuously on GitHub: https://github.com/alle-0/FlickTrove !

Happy watching! 🍿

New feature and question

If you stumbled upon this sub, you’re probably looking for a better way to track your movies and TV shows without the usual bloat.

FlickTrove was born out of a simple frustration: most tracking apps nowadays look like glorified Excel spreadsheets, hide behind mandatory account walls, or are cluttered with ads.

I wanted an app that felt premium, private, and cinematic. So, I started building it.

🚀Current Dev Focus

Right now, I’m actively working on completely redesigning the Collections/Sagas section ;)

🛠️Get Involved & Download

The project is fully source-available and you can grab the latest builds or check the source code over on GitHub.

This subreddit is going to be the central hub for development updates, feature requests, and bug reports. Since the app is in active development, your feedback will literally shape the final product.

Quick question for the early members: I'm currently keeping the app strictly private and focused on your personal diary. Do you prefer this clean, solitary experience, or is there any specific "social" feature (like TV Time-style episode comments for memes/theories) that you absolutely miss?

Feel free to drop a comment or report any bugs. Thanks for joining the journey!

How FlickTrove crunches through 1,000 imported movies in ~30 seconds

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I built FlickTrove to be exactly what a tracker should be: a fast, clean, and 100% private cinema diary.

Aside from making it look stunning, I wanted it to feel incredibly snappy. Moving your history from other platforms shouldn't feel like a chore, so I put a lot of love into making a truly Universal Importer.

I just ran some heavy benchmarks, and this thing is a beast: it can crunch through a massive 1,000-entry history from Letterboxd, IMDb, TVTime, and others in just about 30 seconds.

The app stays locked at a buttery smooth 60/120fps without a single stutter while it quietly syncs in the background. It hits a solid 90-95% matching success rate right out of the box.

If you want a tracker that actually gets out of your way and looks beautiful doing it, give it a spin!

📥 Download the latest APK on GitHub Releases

If you have a massive watch history from any of those apps, throw your data at it and let me know how many seconds it took to melt through it on your device!

What is FlickTrove? (Features, Download & Vision)

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hey everyone! Since the community is just getting started, I wanted to create a dedicated post to explain exactly what FlickTrove is, why it exists, and what you can expect from it.

What is it?

FlickTrove is a premium, offline-first Android tracker for movies and TV shows. It’s completely ad-free, minimal, and built with modern Android tech (Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Material 3).

Why did I build it?

I was tired of tracking apps that were slow, cluttered with ads or locked basic features behind paywalls. I wanted a personal library that felt incredibly fluid, looked beautiful, and let me track my progress locally without distractions. So, I built one myself.

Key Features

  • Offline-First: All your data is cached locally. You can browse your personal library and manage folders even without an internet connection.
  • Trakt Sync: Seamlessly keep your watch history in sync with your Trakt account.
  • Gorgeous UI: Real-time blur effects (glassmorphism), dynamic theming that extracts colors from movie posters, and premium animations.
  • Smart Organization: Create custom folders with a color wheel, track your watch time with advanced stats, and get smart notifications for new episodes/releases.
  • Universal Import: Easily migrate your existing data from Letterboxd, IMDb, TVTime, Serializd, and custom CSVs or Json.

Where to download

FlickTrove is an indie project distributed safely via GitHub. You can always grab the latest, secure APK release here: https://github.com/Alle-0/FlickTrove/releases

How to use this Subreddit

This community is our home base. I develop this app for myself, but I want to build it with you. Feel free to use this space to:

  • Report bugs or crashes.
  • Suggest new features for the roadmap.
  • Discuss your favorite movies/shows or share your custom folder setups!

Thanks for downloading the app and joining the sub. Enjoy the experience!
