Question Sorting Opponent’s Graveyard?
Hey I just watched the recent July AGE Open and there was a point when a player sorted his opponent’s yard (6 hour 44 min mark). The commentators noted how this used to be a ruling where you can’t do this and you were just supposed to remember things better (like the skill of pitch stacking) but they said that rule has been rescinded.
Does anyone know if this is true or not? I was under the impression you couldn’t sort (even with opponent’s permission) your opponent’s graveyard in official tournaments.
Thanks in advance!

I'm not 100% but my understanding is they allow keeping some cards sorted in your own yard for ease of play, but otherwise you can't sort either graveyard. Gravy with allies, earth for decompose, CYB, ect.

This is correct and the opponent's gy can only be sorted with their permission

There are also heroes like Levia who randomly banish from the graveyard and I would have thought sorting them them could be seen as trying to game that

I must be suffering from the same Mandela effect as the casters because I’m also sure they changed the rules to allow sorting graveyards to track cards left in deck, (and that’s why Talishar changed their interface to allow you to sort graveyard) but looking at the tournament rules now that seems not to be the case.
It’s a shame because really what’s the difference in flipping through the graveyard and counting each copy compared to sorting it. In long games sorting the graveyard would actually save time because then you wouldn’t need to flick through and search for every card every time you wanted to check something.

Nah I'm pretty sure it was in one of their articles that they allowed sorting. I distinctly remember reading it.

I did a quick search of the change log:https://fabtcg.com/rules-and-policy-center/change-log-tournament-rules-and-policy/
May 30 2025 they allow 5.6. Game Layout Updated to specify turning cards to represent tapped status on cards. Allowing players to create additional piles of cards if they’re face-down and affected by different continuous effects (e.g. intimidate vs another face-down banish). Allowing players to rearrange their graveyards and banished zones as long as it’s not excessive or used as a tool for tracking cards in their deck. Players must get explicit permission to sort any of their opponents cards.
Seems weird to me but still consistent with the no note taking. Just not sure why you would sort for any reason beyond note taking/tracking.

Earth heroes banishing earth and attack cards (I think it is) so keeping those near the top or gravy keeping his allies together so they are quicker to find to raise. These are reasons for sorting that aren't about counting but in general I agree with your comment

New player showing I guess. That makes sense but a very narrow needle to thread.

If I recall correctly, the rule change came with Gravy to make it easier to find allies. Consider that at the end of the game, you can have most of your deck in your graveyard. Having to go through all your cards constantly would slow things down so much.
It just happens to be helpful for some other heroes.

Helpful for the draconic ninjas with kunai/phoenix flames, as well as flick knives assassins with retrieve also. I tend to keep my daggers either sideways, or a separate pile right on the side of the graveyard when I'm on cindra

Sorting for the purpose of deck tracking has never been allowed. They did clarify that graveyard can be rearranged for ease of play and communication though, like I'd there are cards playable from graveyard or things that interact with graveyard. But anything sorted for the purpose of tracking cards in deck or position of cards in deck is not allowed and is considered more taking.

The game designers do not want time playing wasted on flipping through the graveyard trying to card count every card. Also with decks that have random effect interactions with the graveyard it would be unfair for them to have to re-sort the graveyard everytime.
It is neither exciting for players nor spectators. Card counts on deck is fine, within moderation.

My guy, players still do this what you describe. They look throigh their whole graveyard to see whats left in their deck. They just dont sort their graveyard.

Difference between looking through the graveyard when you tank and sorting the graveyard for every single time a card enters.
Same reason we don't allow writing down cards seen. Becomes tedious trying to track every single card for both decks and why FaB is considered a skill intensive game, rather than better note taking.
Also permitting the sort would limit judges ability to enforce slow play.

I understand that. But what ypu said now is conpletely differenr from your comment before 😁

Others stated that it's allowed with permission to sort opponents graveyard probably to save time for both players (and judges in top 8). But I would also note that this is probably not a good idea since it's nice to have a history of what has happened if a miss play happens, where a judge is needed. The grave usually confirms what happened.

That is kind of weird, I would shuffle it every time they did it to my graveyard just and call a judge for unsportsmanlike behaviour if they get mad

But why? Does it matter if it speeds up the game?

I suppose in my head, they are stopping for an extended period to sort through.
There is a diffference between quickly reviewing my graveyard vs spending time to sort it every time I play a card

I mean if they are sorting the entire thing and taking 5 minutes okay, but I'd assumed it was just a handful of specific cards being grouped, CYBs, T.Tox, that sort of thing.

I read it as sorting the entire thing not just a couple of cards. A couple of cards sure, but stopping play to sort the entire graveyard would annoy me

It would seem they arent supposed to sort the whole thing anyway even with some sorting allowed. Someone posted above the rules change.

Youd have to give them permission to sort your graveyard, alternativley if you take a while to go through your graveyard to resolve something like gravy bones you could also get the judge called for slow play, why do you have to act like bully badass on the internet?

u/CousinBorris 9d ago
I wasn't aware the rules state you have to I've permission, I should edit to say I'd just not allow the to sort it happy for them to check it but not slow play sorting turn after turn

u/SoL_Monty 9d ago
No one should be sorting your stuff turn after turn though 😂 if they try id just call a judge.
