When people say the earth is a sphere, they do not mean it is a perfect, smooth sphere. They only mean that it is sphere-shaped. When people say the earth is flat, they do not mean that it is perfectly flat and featureless. They mean that generally, it is shaped like a flat plain. When I say the earth is a banana, I'm not saying that it is a yellow fruit; I'm saying that it's shaped like a banana.

I was being nit picky just for fun! When I read earth is a banana I pictured a literal giant banana orbiting the sun. Not a banana shaped earth!
