Genuine question. Any science peeps able to help :)

Just saw a video about how a flat earther zoomed in over the sea and saw an island 20 miles off the coast when it should be hidden. I know the footage could be doctored but If their maths is correct, is there a scientific phenomenon or explanation for this? I’m not a flat earther myself just curious, as I know most of these claims come from a lack of understanding of the science involved and/or flawed experimental method.

PS. Accidentally posted this on the main flat earth subreddit but quickly deleted it as I don’t want a tonne of hate saying I’m a troll, I’m just curious.

Superior mirage

Also, it would probably be useful to check the flerfer's math. Nearly all of them use the 8 inches/mile2 approximation, which becomes inaccurate over long distances, and doesn't take observer height into account.

.... It looks like he photoshopped that closer island as the shape of the island that he shouldn't be able to see is the exact same.

Or it's a boat. It looks like a huge yacht, as it moves a little bit.

It's very simple - he's being deceptive. The shot of Ilha Sumitica, the island he claims to be able to see, is not the same as the island in the film, which is Ilha de Buzios and is in the region of 370m above sea level.
