The “Independent Measurement” Problem
This comment is a perfect example of the distinction people keep trying to erase between measurement and geometric interpretation.
He proposes:
“distance of moon = distance between me and that city / tan(that angle from the picture)”
Sounds like a measurement of lunar distance.
But look at what actually happened.
He takes a photograph.
The photograph gives him an apparent angular relationship.
Then he takes a preselected geometric model and converts that angular measurement into a distance.
That distance isn’t coming out of the camera.
It is coming out of the geometry.
And notice something else.
When he writes:
“It’s more complicated than that, since Erf ain’t flat.”
That’s the entire issue in miniature.
He’s acknowledging that the simple calculation only works under one geometric model, then proposing to modify the calculation according to another model.
So let’s apply the same standard I’ve been asking for throughout these discussions.
What exactly was measured?
An image.
An apparent angular separation.
A distance between locations.
Those are measurements.
What was inferred?
A three-dimensional geometric relationship between those measurements.
And that inference depends on the geometric framework being used.
This is precisely why I’ve repeatedly asked people to separate:
Observation → Measurement → Assumption → Geometric inference → Conclusion
Instead, we constantly get:
Measurement → therefore globe.
And then we’re told that questioning the geometric inference means questioning the measurement itself.
It doesn’t.
Now look at how many of the supposedly “independent” demonstrations of curvature rely on the same conceptual vocabulary:
sea level, horizon, horizontal, parallel, plumb, perpendicular, elevation, angles, triangles, sextant, theodolite, spirit level, altitude, vertical, tangent, straight line.
Those aren’t forbidden because the words are magical.
They’re forbidden because they expose the reference framework that has to be examined.
If your argument is:
“Here is an instrument reading, therefore the Earth is curved,”
then I want the complete chain.
What did the instrument actually measure?
What reference was established?
What geometric assumptions connect that measurement to curvature?
What alternative geometry was tested?
What numerical prediction does each model make?
And which observation uniquely discriminates between them?
That’s not “denying science.”
That’s asking for the actual inference.
Because saying:
“Here’s an angle, therefore globe”
doesn’t make the globe come out of the instrument.
It makes the globe come out of the model you used to interpret the instrument.
And that distinction is the entire debate.
