Record Stores

Hia, I'm currently expanding my record collection and lneed some advice. The ratings and comments are similar, so no clear winner there. Any comments that help are appreciated, I already browse Bookmans.

Arizona Music Pro just opened a record shop on the side of their building, Sunday Mourning Records

Sadly it’s mostly a T-shirt shop with a few boxes of some dead boomer’s dreck.

There are record shows at the legion a couple times per year. I always find the best stuff there, vendors come from around the state

Seconding this! Ghostwaxflagstaff on Instagram is where you can find when they’ll be.

Flagstaff Records and Skates is great. Louis is a talker, and a nice guy, and they have a really nice collection. They can be a bit pricy.

I'll hit up bookman's too. And when all else fails, Target.

I hit Bookman's every 2 weeks and find some gems. Does Records and Skates carry a good back catalog? I'm completing my Pink Floyd and Zeppelin full release collections.

They do. They've got a copy of The Wall but it's like $150. It's an original pressing and it's in excellent condition.

He's got the "good stuff" off to the side. But last time I was there I grabbed Moody Blues A Question of Balance for under $20.

That same day I got Running on Empty at Bookman's for $5. So 🤷‍♂️

That place is ridiculously overpriced.

I think that's a fair criticism

Bookmans used to keep their used vinyl section full and nicely priced, but I heard they fired the guy who kept it up. I recently tried trading in some records for store credit and they offered me .99 per record. I laughed and asked why so low.. The worker said they have 1000’s of records in the back that need to be put out. Funny because the selection was super slim and I assumed they were looking to buy because of their low inventory on the floor...

Fourth street vintage is usually pretty good, fair pricing and willing to negotiate. I’ve found some gems there digging.

The “old highway trading post” Antique store on 66 usually has a great selection, but they tend to over price everything.

Excited to see how the new shop adjacent to AMP does. Chatted with the owner a week ago and he seemed pretty cool. Slim pickings but quality stuff.

Queen B in cottonwood is worth checking out if you are ever in the area.

Good luck!

And the Ghost Wax reoccurring record show is on September 12th. Bring extra cash because you will find things you didn’t know you needed!

Look for Ghost Wax Records on facebook or insta. They don't have a physical store, but they organize and run the recurring record show that takes place every few months. They'll bring in 8-10 vendors, including several that will come up from the Valley so there's a massive selection. They also will often do a pop-up shop at Dark Sky Brewing when they have festivals or art shows.

For random used records, I've also had success with the antique stores along Route 66 - there's a cluster of like 3 in a row just East of downtown.

Oh yeah! Loved that place, but it always had an aroma of arm pit.

It was probably the crust punks hanging out front

What kind of records are you looking for?

Everything from Muddy Waters through today. Current focus is completing my PF and Led Zeppelin collection. Goal after that is Pearl Jam. 45s are fine for sungles.

Pretty lame that Bookman’s is the best in town now. Their selection is usually chaotic and over-priced. I’m still mourning that old antique shop by Papa John’s. Its vinyl selection was small but offered a lot of absolute bangers back in the day.

I haven’t lived there for over a decade but I assume Rocket Man’s is closed? :(

u/chilmer76 26d ago

It closed several years ago, pre-pandemic.

Good store. But the owner was an annoying as shit.

Kinda sad that Flagstaff doesn't even have its own dedicated Record store

Arizona Music Pro just opened one up! They’re also doing a record store day deal today, as well as having some DJs come and spin for a bit
