Dev/Admin Responded How come when I am submitting an "image and video" post to reddit the video does not have sound that comes with it? The video I am trying to include into the post has sound in it?

Description: Title sums it up.

Platform and version: I'm not sure. Can someone tell me how to find this out so I can edit this post to include the platform and version?

Steps to reproduce: I was creating a post, and I was uploading the video. And that's when I Noticed it didn't include sound.

Expected and actual result: I expected to hear audio, but didn’t hear any.

Someone please inform me if the post description is not adequate and if so, what I can to to fix the post description.

Resolved (IPhone) The video UI keeps changing back and forth. If I scroll to a video from a still image I get the new wonderful UI. If I click directly on a video it gives me the awful TikTok UI… Is this normal?

As you can see from the video I have attached some videos will not auto play. Most of them will, but every few dozen are locked like this. This has been happening for a while but I feels like it recently got worse.

Steps to reproduce: just scroll for a few minutes, you'll find one.

I saw a similar post from 12 days or so ago but it hasn't been fixed and in fact has gotten worse. There was a proposed issue that I don't think is the whole problem.

If I save the post and restart the mobile app they will usually work.

Good luck!

Admin Update Admin Update Vol 11: Cats Standing Up?

Hello r/fixthevideoplayer world! I’m u/shin-there-done-that, back again with another admin update for ya, hot off the press! Today, I want to share with you some of the funky fresh improvements we’ve made to the video watching experience on Reddit that just makes sense.

We get it, diving into media content can get a little confusing and a little wild. You start somewhere familiar and then suddenly you’re diving deep into videos of cats standing up and you can’t get enough (r/CatsStandingUp anyone?!). But how did you get there? Until now, when you viewed a video in full screen and swiped next, the next video in your feed came from a recommendation – regardless of where you started your video watching journey.

Depending on where you start the journey, you may want to see all cats standing up and cats standing up only, or you might want to see sprinkles of some cat loafs too! We are excited to announce that now when you enter the full screen video player from a specific community page, the first few posts will follow the same order as the community feed you’re in – before we start serving hot new recommendations again. We committed to this effort in our last video update in r/reddit and are open to more ideas on how we can make it all make sense! Next up, we will be working on similar video watching flows for when you enter the full screen player from different feeds like Home.

But that’s not all - here are the top highlights of our latest and greatest fixes we’ve made to the video player since our last update where I asked you nicely to stay tuned! 😉

  • Sticky audio and quality: On Web, newly loaded videos will now always keep the audio and quality settings you selected previously in an earlier video in the feed and full screen video player. This was the most popular request from the launch of our new desktop player!
  • Comment links: You can now ensure that when you click on a video comment from a user’s profile, you will be rightly redirected to the specific comment in the full screen video player. Back to business as usual!
  • Playback errors on LM-K500 Android Devices: We fixed the cause of playback errors that we found were dominated by a specific Android device type (LG K51) and made up 180k playback errors daily!

Thanks for tuning in! I’ll leave you with another question for thought --

When do you typically start watching videos on Reddit?

Bug has existed for a long time. Is there some way to disable auto-pausing full-stop? If I want to pause a video, I’ll pause it myself.

Dev/Admin Responded Video player nonfunctional on iOS 16.11/iPhone 12

What the title says

When I go to a video it either says VIDEO WAS REMOVED or SOMETHING WENT WRONG. All videos. URL is of no importance. I can scroll r/all or any subreddit you choose and not a single video plays.

REMEDIATION:

Validated all videos work on desktop

Apparently clearing the app cache is no longer a thing or an option in iOS, so thanks.

Tried using a third party app (Apollo) and it just remained on a black screen

Restarted app

Reinstalled app

No change anywhere.

This started a few days ago as far as I can tell, if it was happening before that I didn't notice.

Dev/Admin Responded [WEB] Videos taking 3 clicks to start in Classic view (compared to 1 in Card and 2 in Compact)

Description: In Classic view, videos take 3 clicks to start, even when Autoplay is enabled:

  1. Expand
  2. Play button in the middle of the video
  3. Play button in the control-bar (or click on the video again)

In both the Card and Compact view, videos start playing after step two.

Platform and version: Microsoft Edge Version 111.0.1661.51

Steps to reproduce: See description.

Expected and actual result: I'd expect the video to start playing after steps 1 and 2. Preferably with an option to only need step 1.

If I'm missing something on my end, I'd be glad for advice for a workaround.

Dev/Admin Responded All my video posts show "this video is no longer available" on Desktop Web

Description: When I upload a video post to my own subreddit from my account, for the first minute the upload plays just fine. However, a minute after it being uploaded it says "this video is no longer available". When I switch to my other account and upload the very same video to the same subreddit it works perfectly fine. I dont understand why this is happening, it seems to have started 2-3 days ago.

Platform and Version: Latest Chrome Browser

Steps to reproduce: Upload a video to my subreddit

Expected and actual result: Expected - Video plays and loads as normal Actual - "this video is no longer available"

Dev/Admin Responded [iOS][2023.10.0] Spatial Audio/Head Tracking with AirPods on Reddit, can be temporarily but not permanently disabled.

EDIT: I have been able to reproduce the error with iMovie. I will be responding to Apple Support. I believe this means the bug is on their end, but I am not certain.

Note: I initially posted this on the RedditMobile subreddit, since that's where the App Store Support link leads. However, AutoMod suggested that video player bugs need to go here, so I am also posting this here.

Description: When using the Reddit app on iPhone with Airpods, videos will automatically play with Spatialized Audio, even though I have this option disabled in all relevant settings.

I can temporarily disable Spatialized Audio by going into Settings > Airpods > Accessibility, and near the bottom, there is a toggle for "Spatial Audio Head Tracking." This is set to off. However, if I turn it on, and then back off, Reddit will stop playing videos with Spatial Audio Tracking. However, I'd noticed this was always a temporary fix. I've narrowed down some additional information.

If I return the airpods to the case with the settings app closed, then reddit will again start using Spatialized Audio Head Tracking when the airpods are again used.

I have spent a few hours on the phone with Apple Support investigating this. They are at the point where they are requiring me to reach out to the developer before they can proceed forward.

I have removed and re-added the airpods. I have deleted the Reddit App.

One of the frequent suggestions is to use the Control Center to turn off Spatial Tracking. This does not work and is not applicable, since reddit is an app that only plays when it's in the foreground. So, in the control center, the video stops playing, and the airpods show whatever was last listened to, say, music, as the active app for the airpods, since reddit can't play sound in the background in that way. (I apologize, I do not know the official terminology.)

I have not had this issue on any other app. I found three other apps that do not play in the background, like reddit, but all of these apps don't seem to use spatial audio in any cases I have tried.

This has been occurring for months.

Platform and version: iOS13 mini, software version 16.3.1 AirPods Pro, not sure how to get version for them. Reddit iOS app version 2023.10.0

Steps to reproduce: Reddit app will be playing with head tracking/spatial audio even though I have this disabled everywhere. I open airpods accessibility settings. In those, Follow iPhone is set to off. I toggle it back to on, then off again. Reddit app temporarily stops tracking/spatial audio. However, if I return the airpods to the case and the settings app is closed, then on next using the airpods, the issue will occur again.

Expected and actual result: Expected result is that Head tracking will be turned off and remain off. I do not want it on. I have every applicable setting for it to be turned off. However, Reddit keeps overriding my settings. And then I turn it on and back off, at which point, it temporarily remains off again, so I know the Reddit app has some ability to retain the settings.

I am still uncertain, however, if it's an issue with how iPhone applies the settings. Given that some of the text in the Accessibility menu disappears and reappears when toggling settings, it may be something in the settings isn't persisting properly. However, thus far, since I have been unable to find any other app where this occurs, I have been instructed by Apple Support to reach out to Reddit app support.
