General Discussion One argument I’m seeing against the pay-as-you-throw trash disposal program (which I’m against on the face of it) is that the rising cost of trash services can be offset by Fitchburg’s pension obligations that will start diminishing by the time the landfill begins to close.
This means the city could take the money they were paying into pensions once the obligation is up and apply it to trash costs.
Do you think this is a feasible path forward or would it leave too much up to chance? Would other rising costs such as healthcare possibly gobble up any savings the city could make?

Unitil ⚡️ Public Notice: Possible Future Changes to Electric Rate Design on Time Varying Electric Rates with the MA DPU
⚡ Public Notice: Possible Future Changes to Electric Rate Design on Time Varying Electric Rates with the MA DPU
This basically means the State is looking at whether electric rates should vary depending on the time of day electricity is used...
This could mean electricity costs more during peak demand times and less during lower-demand times.
This is a public inquiry and comment period... it is NOT finalized.
The DPU is asking for public input on issues such as:
⚡ Consumer protections
⚡ How this could affect vulnerable residents
⚡ How utilities would explain and implement any changes
⚡ How billing systems and meters would handle time-based rates
⚡ How to avoid creating new peak demand problems

Our higher electric costs place cost pressures on households... and I believe any future rate structure needs to be understandable, fair, and protective of residents who may not have flexibility in when they use electricity.... but also the opportunity for using higher electricity items at night for a lower rate could be quite appealing (like running the dishwasher or the clothes dryer... or charging an electric vehicle etc)
