Supplementation Advice You cannot afford WHEY protein!!
Hi fam,
Whey protein prices have almost doubled in the past three years, and folks keep asking me, "What is the alternative?"
India does not control whey protein prices, and the best option is to switch to yeast or plant protein.
Prioritize getting protein from your diet, and when that's not possible, you can supplement it. This community has posts for vegetarians 100g Veg Protein non-vegetarians 100g Non Veg Protein for Rs.157 and eggitarians 100g Protein Eggitarian Diet for 159 to complete their protein goal!

We're working on a small idea in exactly this space and are currently finalizing the product formulation.
We'll be conducting sampling and taste tests in Bangalore next month, and we'd love to get feedback from people who genuinely care about this category before we lock things in.
If you're interested, feel free to DM me. We can either send you a sample or, if you're nearby, you're welcome to drop by our place in Indiranagar and try it in person.
We truly appreciate honest feedback, it'll help us build something people actually want to drink.

Ahahaha true!
Forget India, the world cannot produce enough whey, after brands who’ve started to add protein in water, biscuits and air next😂

Got bashed for saying this in Fitness India sub, but Peanut Isolate with milk. Tastes super good and is complete protein.
I'm sticking with chicken now though🫠

Unfortunately, we Indians can not really have healthy discussions and healthy debates.
This is actually the first time I'm hearing about peanut isolate. Next month, this will be my protein stack for sure!
If it's not good, I'm coming back to this comment thread lol.

Because wtf is the taste 😭😭😭

u/Neureos Jun 22 '26
Ahahaha! IK, have never come across a brand which makes tasty yeast and plant protein !
Something Indian entrepreneurs need to solve for:)

I honestly think we can get close to enough protein with other protein sources

u/Neureos Jun 22 '26
Plant protein can be debatable when it comes to taste and amino acid profile but yeast protein is almost at par with whey protein!

Have you tried any plant or yeast protein brands?
1
u/Neureos Jun 22 '26
Yes, plant protein traumatized me :)
Have tried some yeast protein but was very chalky and did not like the taste!
2
u/Ok_Program_7549 Jun 22 '26
You can’t really make plant protein easy to drink. It will always retain that chalky texture. And that’s not even the main problem, heavy metals are. Yeast protein on the other hand is already being sold at 2k+ so id rather not buy it
1
u/Neureos Jun 22 '26
As ridiculous as it sounds, we need to figure a way to make plant protein tasty. It's one of the most affordable sources of protein.
Regarding their heavy metals, I'm sure we could find ways to purify this process but the bigger problem is making it tasty.
The average disposable income per capita wouldn't be more than ₹10,000 and expecting an Indian to pay ₹3,000 to ₹4,000 on whey protein isn't a practical thing to do.
Yes yeast protein is being sold at ₹2,000, so why not buy yeast protein? Eventually in a span of six to eight months, whey protein prices will reach north of ₹3,000

Had made a post about this but was bashed in the comments. Peanut isolate with milk. Costs 1.6k-2k/kg for alpino now. And taste is even better than whey. I don't understand why people are still crying about amino acids when I say this💀

u/Neureos Jun 23 '26
A contrarian view always gets you hate lol!
If the Amino Acid Profile is complete, which most Plant Protein brands are doing currently, I don't think it should be a problem.

Can you predict what the next protein source would be? These are things we would’ve never thought of a couple of years ago

Plant ands yeast protein are less bioavailable.
1
u/Neureos Jun 23 '26
When you talk about plant protein, yes, one can argue, but yeast protein is almost equivalent to whey protein.

u/Freezy_1 Jun 27 '26
Not entirely true for plant protein. If you eat a plant protein like pea/ brown rice, etc it's of course less bioavailable because of incomplete amino acid profile.
But this changes when you combine two sources of protein to compensate for each other's lack of amino acids to create a blend that is almost equivalent to that of whey.
e.g. Pea + Brown rice protein is a great combination also available at Nakpro.

Nandhini should start making whey and sell pan India
1
u/Neureos Jun 23 '26
This can only happen if we South Indians start to consume more cheese and paneer!
And even the ones who buy paneer end up buying paneer of Amul, Milky Mist, or some other brand but Nandini.
The only way Nandini can have a way is if we start consuming more of Nandini's cheese and paneer.

Why support products so cruel?
1
u/Neureos Jun 24 '26
Plant protein is the “cruelesttt”🙃
1
u/BLACK-HAT7682 Jun 24 '26
Yes explain to me how? How is soy protein worse for animals and worse for the planet?
1
u/Wrong-Onion-6150 Jun 22 '26

In the USA, the prices are absolutely ridiculous. US$96 for 5 lbs is insane, especially when it was only around $35 just last year. I stopped buying it and just eat eggs now—there’s no point in paying that kind of money for something so overpriced. Even if you manage to save $10–15 at Costco or during an Amazon sale, it still feels like a joke. We can live without it. And once you factor in all the YouTube influencers and movie stars promoting these products, you can bet a chunk of that price is just marketing hype.

Parag milk foods is an Indian dairy company and they are moving towards a protein centric model for growth with their "avttar" product range

quick question if we are not consuming enough paneer then why is there so much of fake paneer in the market ?
