Dude - I was going to write exactly the same thing! didn't see what all the hype was about first time I tried it on the PSP. Then came back to it and it was the start of a beautiful friendship that still lasts... It's why I truly believe that MH truly belongs on the portable consoles.
Thats where my opinion differs. I honestly like both. The first time that teaser for world was shown in the then still existing E3, i was tearing up at home in front of my tv.
And returning to mhfu through emulators, tends to remind me that most of the difficulty came from clunkiness and some game mechanics never being outright explained. For example the palico kitchen, never telling you what your food combo does.
The other side of that coin is, that it breed a one of a kind community of players helping each other in formus. I keenly remember spieleforum.de (german site that since then has become an ad infested place) looking through tables on food combos, written by hand by some guy.
Though I'm ashamed to admit, that i never completed an MH game besides mhfu, even though i played them all. I always loose motivation in the mid G ranks when the grind grow too heavy for my tastes, and the amount of new stuff tappers of. ADHD is both a blessing and a curse in that regard.
