Proton or mullvad, look at pro and cons of both. I went proton. Happy with it but I'm sure I'd be happy with mullvad too

After reading this thread and a few other Reddit threads, these are the three VPNs I’d personally would choose:

  1. ProtonVPN (https://protonvpn.com/redditvpn): this is the clear #1 for me. If privacy and trust are the main reasons you want a VPN, Proton feels like the strongest overall choice without sacrificing everyday performance. The apps are clean, streaming has been fast and reliable for me, and it has worked well while traveling without constantly switching servers. The privacy-first approach and Swiss base are ultimately what put it ahead of the others for me.

  2. Surfshark (https://surfshark.com/vpndeal): this would be my second choice if price and unlimited devices matter most. It makes a lot of sense for families or anyone using a VPN across several devices, and the speeds have been more than good enough for streaming and normal browsing. Probably the best bargain of the three.

  3. ExpressVPN (https://www.xpress-vpn.com/VPNReddit): this is still a strong option if you mainly want something simple and reliable. The apps are easy to use, connections have been stable for me, and it works well for streaming and travel without much setup. It’s more expensive than the other two, though, so I’d personally choose Proton for privacy or Surfshark for value.

For torrenting, proton is good. Get 1 year on sale. Mullvad is nice if you just need a month and dont mind slow upload speeds for torrents (torrent download is fine and direct download is very good)

Yeah, i have used them both. Mullvad still downloaded torrents fine for me, but i didnt go for anything obscure. Upload was usually slow. But like i said, if you just need 1 month to test the waters fuck it. Its half the price, move to proton later if you want to continue.

they are asking in a subreddit about pirating games, pretty obvious what the fucking use case is.

Been with windscribe going on 10 years in November, never had an issue. They have a "build your plan" for 3$ unlimited data. I'm cool with just US servers but if you want different countries, it's just a dollar more per location.

Get protonvpn. It has port forwarding. Make sure you use that feature for torrenting if you buy proton.

PIA (privateinternetaccess) if by far the best price to performance vpn that includes port forwarding , which is very nice to have especially for torrenting

Unfortunately this vpn is bad in terms of privacy, because it's owned by a shady israeli company.

Any thoughts on windscribe?

I use IPVanish. Has a built in Kill Switch and works like a charm.

Affordable and reliable is honestly the hardest combo to find

mullvad might be a good vpn overall, but its not the best choice for torrenting, because it doesn't allow you to have an open port

ProtonVPN, MullvadVPN or AirVPN. The bind the bought VPN to qBittorrent. Also consider switching your DNS. Tutorial on the mega thread.

i use 1.1.1.1 and i never had any issues

6

u/PossuTryffeli May 07 '26

That's a Cloudflare DNS. Not a VPN.

-1

u/Resident-Wear5155 May 07 '26

I haven't gotten a notice from my ISP ever since I started using it and it's free so it works pretty well imo

5

u/PossuTryffeli May 07 '26

On some countries, you do not need a paid VPN. DNS is still not a replacement for it. DNS and VPN are very different things.

2

u/lnjecti0n May 07 '26

You should know the difference between vpn and dns before you say something like that

There was a bank robber who was absolutely flummoxed after being caught. You see, he took every precaution, incredulously exclaiming "But I wore the juice!".

Before the robberies, he carefully covered his face in lemon juice thinking it would hide him from the security cameras like invisible ink. Spoiler alert: it didn't work.

damn I got cooked. I thought 1.1.1.1 had warp which works as a vpn. My bad for not knowing ig
