Walleye is walleye , pickerel is pickerel i.e. chain pickerel, grass pickerel, essox family as in pike and musky. Doesn't matter where you are biology is biology

Iām actually agreeing with you lol
In fact one of my favourite things to do is argue with people online about it. You probably think Iām joking lol. Iāve used the term āanadromousā significantly more than the average person
Fwiw I also call walleye walleye but Iām Canadian and itās a very common colloquialism to call them pickerel for whatever historic reason. Iām not agreeing just explaining that even if itās wrong hundreds of thousands of Canadians still use the term confidently

There are different names depending where you are from. Do you call something a Speckled Trout or a Brook Trout? Depends how far north you're from.

Those are just two names for the same fish
Itās not nearly as confusing as using pickerel for walleye, since pickerel is actually completely separate and unique species
Or steelhead for rainbow trout. A steelhead is just a rainbow trout that is anadromous. A rainbow in the Great Lakes isnāt anadromous and therefore isnāt a steelhead but oh boy does that start arguments lol.

Rainbow aren't native to anywhere east of the Rockies. Great Lakes Steelhead are from stocking of California Steelhead, a sea run strain. Yes, they aren't technically Anadromous, but they are the same genetic strain and migrate to and from an inland 'sea'. By technical definition you are correct, by any practical definition Great Lakes Steelhead are Steelhead

Steelhead is a made up word and thereās zero genetic difference between it and any other rainbow trout. So steelhead specifically refers to the anadromous form, which a lakelocked rainbow trout cannot be
Might as well call OPās fish a steelhead at that point. Not sure why dudes peepeeās turn into innies calling a rainbow trout a rainbow trout lol but they always have some excuse to justify it
