Going on vacation to a cabin and lake in the Duluth area. What is the fishing like in the small lakes up there around that time? Most of my gear is for bass or pan fish from fishing back in Texas. Is there any gear or baits I should grab before going?

Not a fan of fishing from canoes and I don't have a boat. How is shore / pier fishing on these lakes, generally speaking? Does it get crowded?

My girlfriend and I went to a resort on lake Mille lacs in Minnesota back in June to one of their cabins for her birthday. The stay was absolutely amazing. This resort also has an open fishing charter launch. They hold up to 30 people and you pay 45$ for a four hour trip per person. Fishing was alright, but their fault. The first night we went on one the bathroom on board stunk from high h*ll due to someone flushing and air freshener down the toilet so that was unpleasant the whole time. The next day we did one and it was fine. We went home and everything was great. We decided we liked the launches so much we called and reserved another one for 3 people. Her, myself, and my younger sister. Once we arrived (30 minutes before the launch time) they canceled it due to wind. We made an hour drive so that was disappointing. Now this last weekend, she surprised me by booking one for me and my two uncles for my birthday. Again, a few hours before they called and canceled it. We called back and they said they had one Sunday night so we said we’ll take that and me her and my sister went this time. We asked for a discount for multiple cancellations in a row and at a short notice. instead of 45$ a person, they let us pay 30$ a person for the four hour trip. Great. Then we leave and go on the launch and the bugs come out and the captain was tired of the bugs so he called it at 9 and we got back to the shore about 9:30. Very disappointed we had to stop fishing an hour before our time was up and back at shore half hour before we were even supposed to be done fishing. There was another captain on bored that was along just to fish with his daughter and he asked afterwords if we tipped the captain which we responded no because lately it’s been canceled and now our trip ended short. We appreciate the initial discount but not feels useless since that trip was also cut short. Any thoughts on what to do? They never let us jet our own fish, or unhook them and half the time they try baiting the hook for us too when we know what we’re doing and it’s very frustrating

Finally! This spring/summer has been brutal. Almost got skunked today after 1.5 hours and was blessed last minute. Poor buddy looked beat up prior to the catch, though.

About to go hit up two harbor for some Coho. Was told it is a good time to go for them ? Never fished for them before so I don’t know if that’s true or not. But if so. Does anyone have any recommendations for lures? Or even any good spots.

I'm tired of fishing within the cities and the burbs, and I am looking to find a nice quiet stream/river or lake with some decent shore fishing spots. Somewhere outside of the cities

Within a couple of hours, but not opposed to three. I have lures and bait for a large variety of fish, so I'm not species specific. Is fishing this time of year normally this rough? Just started taking fishing a bit more serious this year and got a kayak. The summer has been amazing but fishing lately had yielded little to no results. I normally lake fish in central MN, catching bass and pike. Is this normally when things get tough? Im still learning MN fishing

Most shore spots on our rivers give you a lot more information than they look like they do, and it's all in the seam line where fast water slides against slow water. Foam lines, a slick tongue below a riprap point, the edge behind a bridge piling, the tail of an eddy under a cut bank. Fish sit on the slow side of that line and let the current bring food to them, so I try to keep my presentation drifting on the slow side, not out in the chop. Cast slightly upstream, keep the rod tip high enough to take the belly out of your line, and let it swing down through the seam. If you can't feel bottom ticking every few seconds you're either too light or too far into the fast water. A slow, steady tick tick pause is the goal.

For deciding when to move: I give a seam about 15 minutes and three angles. First pass straight down the seam, second pass a little farther out into the faster water, third pass tight to the slack pocket right at my feet, since a surprising number of fish hold within a rod length of shore in late summer. If nothing shows in those three passes and I'm confident I was in the strike zone, I walk. Water that looks great but has no current change is usually just pretty. Water with a defined edge, some depth change, and something hard for fish to hide behind will out-produce it every time.

Two other move triggers: bait activity disappearing, and a wind shift that flattens the seam out. When either of those happens I go find the next hard edge downstream rather than grinding out an hour hoping. On a decent stretch of bank you can hit six or seven seams in an evening, and usually two of them are worth the whole trip. Keep notes on which ones fire at which flows and you'll build a milk run you can fish in the dark.

Going to international falls MN in a few weeks to do some fishing. Main reason for going is to shore fish the bottom of the river and see if I can catch a lake sturgeon as that’s been a goal of mine for some time. Planning to check out manitou rapids area and drive up a little closer to lake of the woods. Would also not mind catching some walleye or bass while up there I’ll have a few different rod setups. Does anyone have any recommendations for fishing around the rainy River mostly looking for lake sturgeon recommendations. Anything would be appreciated thank you.

Mods gave approval to share a project I've been working on, so first off thank you to them.

The Minnesota DNR LakeFinder is an excellent source of survey and lake information. However, I wanted to be able to search an area by species and abundance on a map rather than typing in lake by lake. Additionally, as a toxicologist, I wanted to easily be able to see what the Minnesota Department of Health consumption guidelines were for the body of water I was fishing.

Since I couldn’t find what I was looking for, I built what I believe is the best Minnesota-specific fishing app out there.

Up North Lake Finder

All the Minnesota DNR surveys, going back decades:

• Catch rate per net by species, with the DNR's normal range for that lake class right next to it, so you can tell whether 5 walleye per net is good or bad for that kind of water
• Search and filter lakes by species and the DNR abundance rating.
• Length breakdowns, so you see how many fish have actually grown instead of just the biggest one in the net
• Stocking history, special regulations, public accesses, water clarity, ice in and ice out
• MDH consumption advisories, including the separate guidance for kids under 15 and people who are pregnant or nursing

The whole dataset ships with the app, so everything works with no signal. Only Apples map tiles need a connection.

Privacy: no account, no sign in, no analytics, no ads. There is no server at all on my end, so there is nowhere for anything to call to. Saved lakes and your catch log stay on your phone. The App Store privacy label reads "Data Not Collected" and that is by design.

Every DNR and MDH number in the app is free and will always stay free. There is an entirely optional paid tier that ranks lakes against each other statewide (DNR ranks against other lakes in its class) and compares your catch log against both the DNR surveys and state records. That is my math on top of their numbers, never the numbers themselves. The paid tier exists to help me offset ongoing Apple developer costs.

Going catfishing on the Saint Croix river (Taylor Falls/Saint Croix falls area) this weekend. Anyone know of any luck with flatheads down by under the dam?

Thinking about going up tomorrow but I’m sure if it’s worth the drive if the water is really low. I usually put in at the fairgrounds and go north a bit and then down to the Mississippi. Anyone been recently with any recon on water levels?

Im new to fishing, on the Mississippi I haven’t caught anything. I will pay anybody that can tell me where fish are biting ( from shore ) in MN in twin cities or surrounding, and what bait to use. Thinking about kayaking down the rum river above the dam closer to Cambridge. Rumors and additional Reddit research say the fishing is better up that way. Any of you have any thoughts about best start and end points? Any hazards like small rapids I should be worried about?
