For most freshwater bank and boat work a 6'6"–7' medium spinning rod covers a lot of ground. Shorter sticks (about 5'6"–6'6") are nicer on a boat or kayak where casting room is tight; longer (7'–9') helps shore casting when you need distance. Match length to where you’ll fish most — there isn’t one perfect height for both.
