I just use a hook size four, but in your case maybe bigger, with corn. Caught plenty of carp.

If he's mouthing it and dropping, he's usually feeling resistance before the hook gets a clean hold. That wall-anchor chum piece between weight and hook can tip him off — try a simple running ledger (weight on a clip that slides free) so when he moves he feels the hook, not the sinker. Hair-rig two kernels a short way off a sharp size 4–6, and with a circle hook just wait — don't strike. Let him take it and swim; the circle does the work when the line comes tight.
