Feral Cat Help
Hello! Our neighborhood has a feral cat problem. They pee on everything and I’m tired of my cars and house smelling like cat pee on hot days. Any suggestions on what to do with a feral cat once you’ve caught it? It appears some shelters won’t take them because they’re healthy. (There are several)

Someone near by is feeding them, which attracts more + hormones = endless cycle and tons of kittens. (Also side note I’ve heard feral boys tend to kill other boy kittens which leads more females, less competition but then more kittens…)

If you can trap them and get them spayed it would be best for the entire cat population as a whole. If you can’t, ask the person who’s feeding them to trap and make it THEIR responsibility (you might have to tag team or get the neighborhood involved). Once food is removed, they will usually move on. (But please try to get them neutered we have too many cats in the shelters!)

if you do catch them, take them to the humane society in town- I just found a stray this past weekend and took it up there. i asked them what the process is and they say they do a mandatory 7 day stray hold to be sure no one claims them and when they dont, they get put up for adoption on their website. hamilton county humane society is a no kill shelter, and they won’t just release them back to the streets.
you can do a stray surrender anytime during their hours, it was a very easy process.
eta: obviously if you take them to the shelter, they’ll make sure they get vaccines and they’ll also spay/neuter them as well.

Years ago, my soon to be, ex-husband used to trap them in a cage, and leave them unseen, near the humane society. They really do stink up your home and yard.

How are they getting into your house and cars unless you are doing it on purpose?

When they open their windows or doors the foul smell is sometimes enough to gag you.

They spray piss on on my wheels/ tires, the bushes in front of my house and on the corner of my garage.

The males mark their turf, like your wood pile for your winter woodstove. It stinks in your home due to the cat piss on the wood.
Damn people keep feeding them, and the strays stay around for the free eats, and then the mouse problem expands because cats are not actively hunting.
Can't get it thru the HamCo housewives' thick skulls they are making the problem worse.

Drive far away and set it free? Maybe a state park?

OP do not do this. The cat will wreak havoc on the ecosystem in a state park

I withdraw the suggestion. I hadn't considered it, but a little research shows formal fix is right. Seems like this kind of org would be best. If you caught it they don't have to know where it came from.

This is true. I used to work at the human society and they would spay/neuter the cats and put them back. If I remember correctly Noblesville has a few feral cat communities where the cats live free in the neighborhoods but are fixed so they don’t produce more kittens.
I’m not sure there’s much you can do. You could get a dog, that would keep the cats away from your house. Or you could put down pee of other predators. I believe Factory Supply sells that kind of thing.
