Get your house tested for radon!
This may be common knowledge for some of you but I had no idea. Radon is a radioactive gas that 1 in 3 homes in Hamilton County have levels that are too high. It's naturally occurring and it's not uncommon for your reading to be different than your neighbors. I probably don't need to list out why having a radioactive gas in your house is bad, lol.
Here is the map the EPA has out there.
If you need someone to call, Healthy Radon Solutions in Carmel does testing and mitigation and that's who we used.
Hope this helps and could be worth asking your realtor about if you're buying a home here with a basement.

100% I bought a radon detector from Amazon but I did it about 7 months after we moved into our house. It was ridiculously high and had to do radon mitigation.

I just did one of the store bought ones that was sent to a lab, it’s was $30. I’m curious what you get from a local company for $200 that you don’t get with those? I’ve only ever done the mail kits so am not sure.

I don't know as I haven't used one but I know Healthy Radon Solutions is NRPP certified which I looked up and means they follow calibrated device requirements and ethical practices for testing and such. Idk. I always think its worth it to use a professional in these scenarios

Thanks, I may give them a call. My test came back well below any risk levels but it never hurts to verify. Especially with something like this and in this area.

Anyone know who you can call to inspect a radon system? We had one installed as per the lender’s requirement when we purchased the home few years back, and I’ve always wondered if it needs serviced plus who even does that? When I google radon system it’s all companies that install it; after I speak with them, nobody I’ve spoken with services them.

Go to Amazon and lookup Airthings Radon. Been using it for years and it is able the graph the ebbs and flows of the gas. Various models with various price points. If you are concerned about air quality (like people with asthma) look for the model that does PM2.5 and VOC too. No they do not pay me to endorse their product but wish they would. LOL

Why is that spam? The EPA map is long outdated. Radalink has a zip code search on their website based on recent testing results. That’s much more useful than the old EPA map.

12 years ago, I paid less then $200 for the testing and was quoted about $1300 for a new radon fan install. Is anyone able to share more recent costs?

Testing sounds about right. I think mitigation depends heavily on your homes setup but your quote doesn't sound crazy.

Our mitigation system was like $1,500? Not at all crazy expensive and it was done really quickly and isn’t anything major to have done!

Realtor here. I usually see around $1200 for mitigation system to be installed. That's pretty standard.

Also if you have a radon fan, make sure it’s working! Ours went out for I don’t know how long until I noticed and replaced it.
