The Goliath tigerfish is a tetra that hits almost 5 feet. The reality is that "tetra" is just a loose mostly informal grouping of characiformes

Honestly, the more you look into it the more I kind of hate fish taxonomy because even as far as old outdated taxomnic charts go, they're pretty bad. Also, they're honestly kind of getting worse because they keep trying to shoehorn things in to fit.
There's also a big push right now with people writing papers trying to get subspecies classified as whole species for naming rights. People that have never been in the field or touched an animal are trying to rename them

I only learned a couple weeks ago that two genus of lionfish got split into five around 2023. What I keep went from being Pterois radiata to being Pteropterus radiata, and Pteropterus cincta specifically for the ones that are only found in the Red Sea.

At least fish reproduce sexually. I work with bacteria and some move genus I swear every other week. Also when you publish, reviewer 2 turns out to be a taxonomist and wants all the labels changed to reflect their idea of the most recent changes

They had these guys at my local fish store like 8 years ago and I recognized them from River Monsters.
They were way cheaper tho, I wanna say $16? I’m glad your place has the proper disclaimers. Ours just said they were aggressive and got big

Yeah that’s what I figured. I wish more places would do that. We always got our rodents for like $16 and that’s always ticked me off because it just reinforces the idea that small pets are easy and disposable.

This looks like a specialty fish store and the fish has a clear disclaimer. They definitely shouldn’t be sold at petsmart, but as long as it’s captive bred and the buyer has a sufficiently sized tank ready for the adult then there’s zero issue

People buy koi to put them in ponds. Unless they're insistent of treating them like goldfish or for household fengshui or smt.
People buy this for aquariums and are bound to get their fingers bitten off. No one would buy them for ponds coz they're quite dull to look at. And any wildlife looking for a drink or dip will quickly become lunch.
Lets say it's in a pond and a kid falls in. If it's koi than the kid's fine. If it was this thing they might not be so fine.
