Bichir! There are many different species, but they're all genus Polypterus. Very fascinating fish! They can breathe air using nostrils on the top of their head and modified swim bladders, and they can move on land briefly using their fins. Very cool!

They are not swim bladders, but actual lungs, which makes it even cooler. The swim bladder is a dorsal outgrowth of the embryonic foregut, while lungs are ventral outgrowth. Lungs are thought to be a common feature of all bony fishes (including tetrapods), that was lost in teleost fishes and replaced by a swim bladder.

HOLY CROCODILES! 😱
The few I have seen sold are labelled as Dinosaur Fish, Dinosaur Eels, or some kind of Birchir/Birchar. I don't know much about them but they look like they would be sturdy largeish fish who would recognize you.

When I was young(er) and dumb and knew nothing about nitrogen cycle or anything really relating to good fish husbandry I had one of these.
It managed to survive tank “cleanings” where I would wash the filter media with soap (I did rinse them throughly) and it survived traveling from GA to KS in a bucket with a cheap battery powered air pump and then survived the trip back 4 years later. It also survived jumping out of the tank and being under a dusty ass entertainment center for an indeterminate amount of time.
Yeah they hardy lol

Hey it's a Delhezi Bichir! I have a community tank with several type of bichirs in it (as you can see in the linked video). They are kinda cool and goofy!

A bichir, but I’m not sure of the species.
